Potentiometer swap to get more brightness question

Hi!

I’m trying to get more brightness out of my Lace Alumitone Bassbars in humbucking mode (bright enough in single coil mode).

What would give a better result between:
1) replace the 250k volume pots for 500k or 1m ?
2) use a no load tone knob (or install a tone bypass switch) ? - I’m currently using a Fender TBX tone by the way.
3) other options?
 
I heard that not all active preamps work well with these pickups since they are not and tend to overload them. Plus, the pickups are all ready hot. Adding a preamp seems a bit overkill, no?

I am unfamiliar with the pickup personally, but the official website says preamps are fine. Passive wiring can only subtract sound. Active preamps allow to actually boost signals.

Kindly refer me to ONE on-board bass guitar preamp that DOESN'T add hiss and white noise when you boost the treble. I know that absolutely transparent and effectively noiseless analogue EQ exists ( E.g. Neve V-series!) - but I have not to this date ever seen one built into a bass guitar...
 
A passive pickup is brightest when wired direct to output. You can install a switch to give you that option (bypass all controls). Introducing any resistance will load the pickup (dampen the resonant peak), but generally 500K pots seem to be a pretty good option if you want some control. 1M is brighter, and no-load pots are like direct wiring. You can mess around with different options to dial it in, but direct to output is the brightest, and easy to test - if you like that sound, work with it...

Another trick would be to use a low-capacitance cable. Introducing capacitance shifts the resonant peak down. Unless you use active electronics, the cable is the major source of capacitance. However, this would also affect your "single coil" tone. Alternatively, you could use a cap (or a few) to dial the tone in different settings.

The last passive option is introducing an inductor (like Wilde Q-filter), which wired on a tone control would gradually lower the inductance, and thus raise the resonant frequency. You'd also lose some volume (not unlke a parallel wiring on a humbucker, I guess). The trick seems to be not to dial it in too much, otherwise you start cutting lows and low mids. I have no experience with inductors, but theory and reports from others confirm this works. But given that it's not more popular, I assume it may not sound too good, or it may be too finicky to dial in.

In all this, I'm assuming Alumatones work like normal pickups, and that the "humbucker" mode is like a series mode.

For me at least, my 2 band ernie ball. I mean... obviously there must be noise.... but it isn't audible direct to the board during recording.
 
Fwiw, yes use 500k ohm pots at least with hb pickups to increase treble. And put a good preamp in there to shape it how you like.

Also... from active basses I've owned....

ibanez from 70s had very audible hiss increase from cranking treble.

1970s Alembic series 1 had no hiss audible from anything you could do with its complex eq.

USA ernie ball S.U.B. from early 2000s has no audible hiss from cranking treble.

Japanese/ Korean kramer forum 3 with korean hazlab has minute hiss from cranked treble.... but it sounds so gooood like that so it is the only way I play it. The hiss is very low level in this one.

Carvin from roughly 1990ish had a tiny bit of audible hiss with treble cranked... although it was so bright you never needed to.

Current carvin icon including the piezos.... no hiss no matter what settings i choose.

Steinberger xl2 way back had no hiss that i recall.

LTD 6 string (i forget model... entry level but a really nice instrument) hissed some with treble cranked

and i'm being really picky here and going direct to recording board with each.

And in use every one that hissed had no issues being recorded like that.... it was easily removed from signal. The noisy ibanez was my main bass through early years of my career until i got the alembic..... this was all decades ago.
