Praise Report: GHS Precision Flats

So I've got them on the P5 and they sound great. Full, with definition, nice tension and no flappines on the B string. In fact the tension felt so good I checked the through-holes to confirm the shop didn't string them through, and I was proven wrong. The shop did string through.

Should I be concerned about this? My understanding is that they aren't meant to be strung through. Has anyone done this before and been fine long-term?

My inclination is to bring it back and ask that they do a setup again this time top-loading the strings. But if it isn't a problem now and won't be an issue later, I might keep it like this.

Comments welcome!

GHS Precison Flats are designed in a way they can be installed thru-body with no issues. So, as long as they're not giving you problems with intonation or tuning stability, I wouldn't worry about it. Trying to have them reinstalled would probably cause more issues than leaving them the way they are.

Thank you! Appreciate your insight. Sustain and tuning feel great actually so that was my first hint I should check.

I'll be leaving them through body and will check the witness points to make sure they're all fine too.

I just got a hold of an RB820 and the previous owner had them on I think ( Purple silk, no silk on ball ends and brass coloured ball ends) . The owner added a string through option in addition to the stock top load. I'd never experienced GHS pf before ( assuming that's what they are). Sounded nice. Anyhow, I have taken them off the bass because I will be doing BEAD on it with other strings in mind. Examining them after taking them off indicates no issues from them being strung through. I think. I say that , because I have no experience with string through and flatwounds. Only rounds. Please examine and see what you think

They do look very much like GHS Precision Flats to me. Another way to confirm that is to measure the winding length (ball end to taper/silk). They should be roughly 38".

Probably been asked a zillion times already, but what is the 126 PF like in terms of feel on a 34" scalle. I know it's subjective and a string may feel different at the same scale length on different basses due to other factors other than scale length. But generally. Is it a good usuable B? By comparison I have used La Bella 54's 128, Chromes 132 and Roto88 135 ( really a 120 round) and found them ok for low B. I have a bass now with the 3 GHS strings, 65,85,105 I mentioned were on a previously purchased bass on this need a B to go with them. Currently just have the la bella 128 on with them just to have the 4 strings. I've done string through with the 65-105's on this new bass as well, as they were on the Roadstar II. I'm assuming doing the same with the 126 would be fine as well. The PF's seem pretty flexible

I’ve had the Precision Flats on my MM jazz since 2016 (could not believe it’s been that long, but that’s what the order date says), absolutely love em.

When I got the AVII 1960 reissue Precision last year, thought to have alternative sound options between the two basses so I put the GHS Pressurewounds on it. They sound good, but all I keep thinking for the past year is “i wish i had those strings on THIS bass”…. so today I ordered me a set of the 3050’s and that’ll be that I think - flats on both. Can’t wait!

Sorry to reply to such an old post, but can you explain why one would choose the CM3050 set over the M3050? With the D and A string gauges .05 less than one would expect? Does it have to do with making the set feel more balanced?
Yes, it's about "balanced tension".

M3050:

G 045 - 41.5 lbs.
D 065 - 50.7
A 085 - 51.2
E 105 - 41.2

CM3050:

G 045 - 41.5 lbs.
D 060 - 46.5
A 080 - 44.9
E 105 - 41.2
