I've had these GHS strings on my Höfner bass for a week. IMO, these strings are very well made and sound great. Prior to installing these GHS strings, I actually thought my bass may have structural issues that I just couldn't trace. Surprisingly, intonation issues, fret buzz, and rattles that I've experienced with LaBella and Pyramid strings are nonexistent with GHS.
The strings went on easily, although I would prefer a thinner diameter near the tuning post, especially on the E string. Because of the thickness of the E string I could get only one and a half turns around the tuning post. Thankfully, I was able to tie the string on so i'm not concerned with slippage. Also, if the ball end had been any larger or my tailpiece thinner, I may have had trouble with the strings fitting the tailpiece.
The string gauges seem just about perfect for this bass. I'm able to set my action and more importantly my intonation more precisely than before. Balance between strings in tone, tension, and volume is very similar. The neck of my bass straightened slightly due to what I think is less tension while under my fretting hand this string seems stiffer. Both of which are qualities that I appreciate.
Remarkably, these strings seem louder than LaBella or Pyramid strings. I actually had to lower my pickups slightly because of (what I think is) the stronger magnetic pull. While keeping the depth of the Labella and Pyramids, the Hofner now has a clearer, more defined and much more of an "acoustic" sound.
For me, These strings are a home run. They have the sound, feel, and high level of construction that brings out the best in this little bass.
I'm going to keep these on this bass for years. I can't wait to hear how these strings mellow with age.
Great job GHS!
