Praise Report: GHS Precision Flats

They still have that great tightly focused dark tone. Smooth; Deep, Thick, & Rich. They hold their tune better than any other string I've ever played. Since that magic 6 month mark, they just haven't changed at all. Plenty of sustain, and quite lively - not dead or dull at all.

GHS as a string company wasn't even on my radar until I started reading positive reviews like this, which convinced me I should at least give them a try. Thanks, Linnin!

Not to mention the fact I was very pleasantly surprised when I found out I can even order a custom set from BSO for under $25! Thanks, Jason!

So now that my 105-55 are about 4 weeks old I can conclude the following: These will NEVER come off. Now the tension is perfect, the sound is perfect, the set feels balanced, just as the sound... 4 weeks and they're already quite dead (lots of jam sessions, rehearsals and hard foam under the bridge :D) Now my setup is perfect as well!

Thanks GHS! Almost all the strings I use are from you guys, or at least they will be when I finally have better steady income! :D :D

For a Gibson SG Bass, should I go with the short scale or medium scale set better?

What is the distance from the bridge to the nut? That is going to determine whether you need the short scale or medium scale (which isn't in production yet, but I'm sure we could figure something out for a pre-production set).

Well. after playing the new med scale on my tele.... Wow, just wow. They mellowed in so nice. The tension is great, not too much at all. They fit so easy and the silks end just like they do on the long sets on 34" fenders. Really think these strings were made for this guitar. It has renewed my love of this bass.

But now I have a problem. I have no basses with roundwound anymore. So... I'm now in the market for a 4 or 5er with humbuckers and I need new strings for it. Will be using it for funk, slap, etc. What GHS strings would be good for a slap bass? Looking for tension on the lower half of the scale, light or med gauge. No down tuning. Looking to keep that solid fundamental, with singing (not screaming) harmonics. So Mr. GHS, what can you recommend me? Also could use some recommendations on reasonably priced basses (500 or less) that works well with the strings.

So to recap, "Whats the best bass/ghs string combo for funk/slap?"

Thanks,

Dave

Since someone WILL say it, you can use whatever you want for a great funk/slap tone. I have a number of instruments and they all give me the slap tone I want (case in point, just recorded a video using some new unreleased strings with a P Bass and it sounded beefy, funky and nasty when slapped).

Now, with that out of the way, here are a couple options that I would recommend.

For the bass, any used Jazz style bass would probably be suited for your needs. They're also easy to find in your price range and as long as you can play it prior to purchase, should be very happy. I dial the neck pickup back just a tad with the bridge pickup on full, and it gives a nice, dry tone that works really well.

For strings, you can't go wrong with Boomers. They have a nice snap to them when you slap on them, and can get that dry, nasty funky tone when you want also. Larry Graham uses them, so there's a good tonal point of reference. Personally, I use either Progressives or Super Steels. They're both brighter and a bit more focused than Boomers, with the Progressives having a bit more bite behind them than the Steels. They have a lot of good clarity for slap and funk, but also thicken up nicely for other genres.

Oh do tell! :)

They're being released at Summer NAMM? :woot:

We had them field tested by a lot of our touring artists (Mark Damon of the Pretty Reckless, Aden Bubeck of Miranda Lambert, Stu Hamm, Lee Sklar, Larry Graham, Jen Oberle of Vertical Horizon, Angeline Saris, Dave Pomeroy and others I can't remember right now) and everyone loved them. Mark Damon went so far as to say that he put the set on, did a sound check and the engineer said "I don't know what you changed, but KEEP IT!"

NICE! So any chance we can already get a glimpse of this new string? Name? Material? :o

I went ahead and ordered a set of GHS_3025 for the Ibanez acoustic. I'll report once they are here and installed.

Sorry I couldn't help; I haven't put P Flats on my acoustic as of yet. I'm sure that despite the loss of volume (which any string other than phosphor bronze is going to have), they'll work really well with your instrument.

No problem. The volume loss is moot (or mute!) as, in my opinion, no acoustic bass of this size is worth a hoot if it is not plugged-in. I have read good things about the TI's on these basses and I am a long-time user of TI's but I put the GHS "lights" on a fretless jazz (a gift for one of the yutes at church) and those were excellent. I liked them enough to get a second set for one of my jazz basses as well but I rarely play the jazz so I have not been able to really enjoy them. The acoustic has been collecting dust as I really hate those bronze strings (I am a flats guy for sure). I am hoping these GHS flats will allow me to use this bass for some "acoustic" work.
Stay tuned.....

I know, this is a tease. This is the prototype set that's still on my Lakland Skyline 44/64. The initial version was with a 37" winding length, which is shown here as the E string is strung thru-body. It BARELY clears the nut. I have adjusted the specs so they'll be a 37.25" wind, which will be good for 34" scale basses, 35" scale basses (even including the MTD in the office with the zero fret) or 34" scale basses that have a thru-body option.

Oh, and they also have red silks.
