Preamp + power amp club?

I dig class D stuff, and I have a Genz Benz that I use for smaller gigs and for home practice. Unfortunately all of the class D amps I've tried live with my main band (including a power amp that supposedly had similar wattage to the non-class D power amps I use) haven't cut it. There may be others out there that would work better, but I haven't physically come across them yet. I could probably use two class D amps (one for each cab) to get the job done, but it hasn't seemed worth the expense or hassle yet since it's really not that big of a deal to lug around my pre-power setup in a relatively compact 3RU rack.

Noble pre-amp/DI >> Crest ProLite 3.0

I'm fortunate to have recently acquired a Jule Monique which sounds absolutely incredible but when playing out, my Noble is the one that travels with me based on size and ease of transport. I have also played a gig or two with my VT Bass DI >> Crest ProLite 3.0 and although different than both the Noble/Jule sounds great as well.

This is my main rig , very versatile because of all the doubling gigs I do.

Radial firefly 2 channel tube di into, trace Elliot v type pre, powered by 1 traynor sb 500( using effects loop return only, other traynor is a back up.

Art power station in an Skb 6u shallow rack.

I can cover any type of gig with this set up and have some options to change tones by how I route everything together.

I agree, while my Genz has the power to do be as loud and my old Crown, it tends to sit "on" the mix rather than "in" it, definitely does hi-fi better than any other sound. Another case of crisp, clear digital audio sounding too clear to actually sound right in some cases. I still break out my old Yamaha PB-1 and Crown Powerbase 2 combo when I know all I need is a thicker sound, like old soul music or reggae gigs, I guess it just puts out more pleasant harmonic distortion across the bass band than class D. I got that setup 20 years ago since it sounded warm and I didn't have to deal with tubes, I'd say it's been a good investment:)
I like the modern sound too though, as I get older and lazier, I find that I get to turn the sound pressure down with the Genz and it's still easy to hear, and I like running a whole show with 1 9lb box and 2 cables even more :) Luckily more of my gigs utilize that sound, especially when using electric upright, but I'm not afraid to use the old rack cases and 40lb power amp when needed.

Art Tube Channel type 259 -> Crest ProLite 3.0 (non-DSP) -> assorted fEARful cabs: 15/6/1, 15/6/1 + 15/1/6, 15/6/1 + 15sub, 12/6/1 cube, etc. :smug:

I like the Art 259 pre + ProLite 3.0 so much, I bought another pair and took them to Hawaii for gigs there with a single 15/6/1. I'm playing mostly Reggae and Psycho-Billy, with some Gospel and Jazz now and then. :cool:

Why did they discontinue that Pre? :confused:
