Preamp + power amp club?

What I'm using these days. Never been happier.

Signal chain is

Shure glxd wireless/tuner
Boss cs-2 compressor sustainer
Darkglass b7k ultra
Darkglass duality fuzz
Sans amp RBI
Crown xls1500
Ampeg 410he and 15.

Using this like a 3 channel setup.

1 only the eq from b7ku into rbi

2 b7ku eq and dirt into RBI

3 only the b7ku eq into duality fuzz into RBI.

"channel 1" mainly gets used during ballads.

"Channel 2" mainly gets used when guitar player is playing more heavy rythm guitar type stuff

"Channel 3" I use mostly when guitar is playing something a bit more lead like. But we have a couple songs where I throw it on Mainly to sound more original but I mostly use the fuzz to take up more sonic space when our guitar player is playing more lead like stuff similar to Muse, RATM, and so on.

I don't have enough experience with the Mesa to compare. Played a D800 briefly once and thought it sounded great. The switches and Range control make the Zephyr pretty special, IMO.

Yea i was really liking that range control. I was wondering if the voicing knob was similar to the range dial on the zephyr. From online listening it seems to effect everything more than the voicing. With both preamps i would have oelne formidable rig

I have a Noble DI/Pre but don't use a pure power amp with it. Have thought about the Demeter Minnie 800D, but you can buy an integrated head for that price and I like having some additional EQ control. I'm currently using it to tubify my Markbass LMIII and go to the main input, rather than the effects return, so that I can have some control over the high and low mids.

This is exactly why i have gone the pre/power way. 800watts seems to be the standard now fow integrated bass amps. Thats all well and good, but if you want more than 800watts, or if u want 800watts into an 8ohm load, you are pretty much relegated separate pre/power rig

Ok Here is my rig, I have always been a preamp/power amp guy.
The current config is>
Sansamp 3 chn bass DI>>
BBE 383 pre amp>>
EV 2x15 eq>>
Crest CA9 2X900w@4ohms powers 2 EV 15b's and a 2x10m's

Sometimes I will switch the BBE out to mt Sansamp RPM

Yeah it's 50 lbs, but has absolutely blown away 2000w house PA's and subs that use the modern lightweight amps., I have never, ever clipped it.

i know most power amps should 'sound' neutral; in that they (the power amps) should not color the sound in any way, shape, or form.

with that being said, anyone have much experience with lighter amps like the peavey dpc1400x, the eden wt1250, or the crown k2?

the peavey is digital and i've read that digital amps can be fussy. also, is the fan noisy?

the eden has a tone control for quick tonal changes if the room needs to be tamed.

haven't heard much on the crown but the name carries weight.

or is there another light power amp that's the rage right now?

I played in a band that used a pair of Crown K2's for the P.A.. I was very, very impressed with them. I haven't looked for a used one in a long time. If they're still out there, and there's still replacement components available for any repairs needed in the future, I'd definitely buy one.

I've never tried either the Eden or the Peavey, so I can't comment.

There's a couple of guys on this forum that use Crest Pro-Lite amps, and all the posts on them have been very favorable.

And I certainly hear you on the Lead Sled thing. The rack I've always used contains both my HBP-1 and my CA9, and so I estimate it's a good 70 to 75 lbs. Now I'm no youngster, but I can still move my rack without help, it's not a breeze, but it's also not murder. I also use a hand truck that converts into a cart, and it really helps on load ins-load outs. If I ever go back to gigging regularly, I'll buy a separate rack for my CA9 to make transportation a bit easier.
