    Leo Fender himself said so.

    https://www.fender.com/articles/gear/jaco-geddy-and-flea-cant-be-wrong-the-story-of-the-jazz-bass

"By the end of the 1950s though it was time to expand the Fender bass category and Leo Fender and his staff turned their attention to a new “deluxe” bass guitar design in 1959. And just as the Stratocaster expanded on the Telecaster rather than supplanting it, this new bass would complement the Precision by offering great tonal versatility and a design that went beyond the utilitarian to the realm of the sleekly stylish. If the Precision was a Chevy, the new deluxe model would be a Ferrari."

The Precision was created by Leo, the Jazz Bass was developed by sales/marketing. Need I say more?

I'm not saying the Jazz Bass is inferior

You couldn't pay me to put up with owning a Ferrari. However, although a Jazz bass is not my first-call instrument, if you own more than 3 basses, one should be a Jazz.

A Ferrari is faster than a Chevy. Therefore, a Jazz bass is faster than a Precision.

    Precision is a pickup truck.
Jazz is a sports car...in my opinion.
A precision can carry the whole band!

In a Guitar Player magazine interview years later, he said, “Well, it’s like a car, you know—you come out with a standard model, then you have a deluxe model—a Cadillac version.”

  13. IMO calling a Jazz a Ferrari relative to the PB being a Chevy had to have come from the the marketing department, or Leo knew more about sales than we give him credit.

In the 1950s if the Precision was a Chevy or a Ford, the Jazz Bass was a Ferrari or a Cadillac.

It wasn't until 1967 that Ford beat Ferrari.

I know this will make me unpopular, but I see the precision as a Toyota Corolla and the Jazz as a Toyota Camry. :smug:
