Premium 1x15 Bass Cabinet?

It's the NY151 Randy Jackson sig cab...say what you will about markbass but I found this to be really impressive and it is only 37 lbs and the handle is well placed.

I play a NY151 (not the RJ model) and absolutely love it. I don't have a lot of experience with other 115s (aside from noodling in music stores) but an LMIII on top of a NY115 is a very capable little rig. I've played gigs with and without PA support, indoor and outdoor and its never left me wanting. I'd like to add another NY151 but its so far down the priority list (and I don't actually need it) that it probably won't ever happen.

+1 on the Markbass NY151. It's not the sexiest cab on Talkbass but I have been using it for several years and love the tone. Before buying it, I tried a good number of 115 and could not find the tone I was looking for. Even within the Markbass offerings, I think this cab offers the best tone. Its form factor is exceptionally good and the top handle makes it an easy one hand carry. I tried two for a while but was not as impressed. If it's going to be really loud, I prefer using my Berg NV610; I find it easier to hear myself than with the 15 for some reason.
My NY151 is generally paired with an Ashdown little bastard and I can cope some really nice old school tube tones with this config. Think modern B15.

Would you mind elaborating on this a bit? I wouldn't have thought adding a second would alter the tone so much, just give more volume. My plan is to eventually add a second 151 to "complete" my rig, this is the first I've heard about a possible negative so I'm curious. Also what amp were you driving both with, the Ashdown? Thanks.

I don't exactly know. I was expecting to see the goddess of music in Technicolor and did not. I perhaps was expecting to hear myself better and did not. I was pretty close to my stack both times I tested this in a live context. That is not always ideal to hear a 115 or 2x15, having more distance is generally better than being right on the top of it. With that sort of situation a ten inch drivers and particularly closed cabs seem to do better. It did not sound bad by any means but it did not sound twice as good and it did not cut through the mix as much as I would have hoped.

Ok, I think I get what you're saying. I wouldn't expect two to cut through better or even sound better per se, just more volume and headroom. I thought you meant it sounded worse than just a single and that's what had me curious. I would have expected you to be able to hear it a little better with the second cab being a closer to ear level though. But I guess realistically it's still only at waist level. Better than boot level but still not pointed at your ears.

I've been gigging the LDS/Faital 1x15 for about 6 months or so and I am more than pleased. It has put my LDS/Faital 2x15 (except where needed for high volume gigs), Genz Benz Neox 212 and Berg AE212 out of gig rotation. At $500 shipped new there is nothing available new that can touch it at that price point, nothing. I'd even speculate that there are no single driver 15 cabinets available new in the US that can out perform it.

I went back a page and didn't see it and pardon me if you already posted, but does your cab have a midrange driver or tweeter or just the 15"? I bet it is nice, I am such a fan of 15's and only recently have started using 12's - but simply have to always have a pair of 15's for one of my rigs as well.

It is a single 15" driver, no tweet, no mid.

I'm thinking about adding 1x15 to my setup. Currently using a Berg HT210 and looking for something with a more classic rock voice. Which of these cabs would be voiced more to those kind of tones?

Also, how do the Mesa Subway and Powerhouse cabs compare (other than weight)? Is SW more of an all rounder and PH more of rock voicing?

Well, the HT115 is a natural pairing for the HT210, but they are hard to find. I have not paired up my HT210's with anything but an HT115 (as far as 1x15's go), so I cannot definitely vouch for any other specific combo with that cab.

As for Subway versus PowerHouse, many will say that the PH is more "rock-voiced," but I would counter by saying that A.) the Subway cabs do rock very well, and B.) the PH cabs are not "just for rock." My PH210/PH212 stack is actually very versatile. They are just voiced slightly differently, and IME/IMHO, they have many similarities, as well.

i feel you on that. don built a 2x15 pr400 cab for me, and it's great, but a single 15 would have done the trick just as well.

I've heard a lot of good things about these, but have also read comments that they're no better than any other premium cabs. All I know is that the 1x15 Fearless I played thru briefly had something special going on. Crystal clear and sweet up to ear-bleed volumes (the owner walked over and rolled the volume on the GK to almost 10).

Wish I could afford one or had the talent to build one. I have neither. So I bought a Hartke HD115 and will add an HD210 that's also 500 watts. Love the Hartke thing, too. Clear and deep.
