Premium price for premium sound?

@Cole Louis Allar you are young and still relatively new, meaning you're still getting used to the norms and culture of this forum. In time, you will learn how to not post useless stuff that will derail very quickly, like this one did. But that comes with time.

They might be easy to see, but with my plate of school and work, I don't have enough time to read most forms on the site. It's like if people are going to comment on my form only to complain about something that's not even related to the form at all, then don't comment on it.

I've already had to patiently deal with someone similar to your ignorance and I really don't wanna repeat myself again. (not meant in a bad way. You don't know yet the norms of the forum which is acceptable. Whether you choose to learn about them or not is a whole other issue).

max money, to me, equals max comfort. You CANNOT build me a squier that plays like my Fodera or Smith, nor can you build a GK that is as light or sounds as good as my Berg + Tecamp combo. Seriously.

It all depends on how much work you're willing to do yourself. Americans live in a service economy now, and have lost the sense that they can still do things for themselves.

Guys. I'm not asking if low price will equate to best in class quality. I'm asking if you think shelling out extra money for a certain rig is really worth it or if you think a low price for good value is good enough.

When I started out, low budget, starter, generic equipment was good enough.

As I developed, my tastes evolved, not just sound, but what I look for in every aspect of a bass: neck profile, radius, number of frets, weight, pickup types/placement, electronics, etc...

Now, a starter, generic bass is not good enough. There are some low budget basses that would be okay platforms for some extensive mods, but then I'd rather buy a better bass to begin with.

Squier for thee but not for me. No offense, but at my age I am long past lower end instruments. I've worked hard and now I'm retired so I indulge myself with a quality MIA bass from time to time.

Someone who put the time and money into lessons and practice will sound better and get better gigs than those who put their time and money into shopping and bass-talking. Period. Every time, in every style and situation.

If you want to sound great and get excellent, paying gigs, log off TB now and never ever come back. Practice instead. Put your shopping time into shedding time. Slap your bass and save your money. As long as your gear isn't garish and functions properly, you'll be fine.

"High price" depends on how much money you make. With that, your perception of price levels changes. I won't play any squier as they are just not good enough.

What makes premium?

I own a Vietnamese-made Peavey Grind 6. Probably not what people think of when the word 'premium' comes to mind. Very well-made, mind you. I then loaded it with an Aguilar preamp (premium in the minds of most) and SD Basslines pickups (definitely premium considering what they cost). The result is, well, a very 'premium' sounding instrument.

As already said, it's amazing the time people take just to let you know they don't like your post or you're trolling, or they're not interested....

Quality is quality from brand to brand... that said, I have a few Ibanez basses. The more they cost the better they feel and sound. Don't think that paying less than 500USD you're going to get a bass with as good of quality as something twice to five times as much. There's a reason they cost more. The wood is much nicer, it's aged, solid and not green or new. It's settled. The attention to detail is much better. The manufacturing and quality of components are better. Think Toyota vs. Lexus.

And can be found for 6-900 not necessarily "cheaper" but cop the stingray tone/vibe with a smaller, lighter package, and some character beyond the 'ray sound.

I have a Fender MIA P that sounds very good. I have a Squire Matt Freeman P that also sounds very good, although slightly different. The Squire is more vintage sounding and the 2104 MIA is more modern, but both still similar. Both great, both equally usable. I use them interchangeably and no one really notices the difference in sound in a full band setting. I also think the Freeman has a more comfortable neck. But I would play either one anytime without regret.

OP practice really hard at playing punk while standing. Someday, when you are really good at it, then think about buying a new bass. You will know you are ready when your manager at the McDonalds no longer thinks bass is lame after seeing you jam out some killer Ramones covers from memory.

Eh, statements like this are misleading. While I'm sure your gear is unique I see amazing bass players in bands using cheap gear and they sound incredible. I also see amateurs playing expensive gear and they s*ck b*lls.
