Prince fires his bassist.

I found a link, he said he fired an unnamed male bassist because Ida learned 150 songs to get the job and the old bassist couldn't.

Then this is old news b/c Ida has been with Prince for a few yrs now.

I've probably learned and played a couple thousand songs over the years. I couldn't play all of them upon demand without some review, but at any given time I'm sure I have 300-400 songs in my active repertoire.

It's not that big of a deal if you call yourself a professional.

I think he should have known at least half of Prince's songs before he even auditioned. And he should have been learning more every week until he knew them all.

not knowing 150 Prince songs when ya work for him...anyone really listened to the bass on a prince song...not like its hard stuff...now 150 Rush songs would be a tall order...i call it lazy.

Andrew Gouche gave a Master Class at this weekend's Bass Boot Camp. As of Saturday afternoon, he was still Prince's bassist. Hearing what he played there and his background, I'm having a hard time believing limited song knowledge could be a factor.

Of course, perhaps that's not the reason - he did say Prince was known to be - ah - mercurial... And perhaps -none- of it is true. I went through about 4 pages of Google hits and didn't see any corroborating material...

Last bassist I knew of with Prince was Gouche... But, I also couldn't find else anything about this. I would be surprised if Gouche got fired from any gig though; he has such great ears, he could probably sit in and learn the songs as he was hearing them... Haha.

Actually, he talked about having been fired from the Chaka Khan gig, and speculated on reasons (none was ever actually given him).

And Prince called the next week. Talk about your "one door closes, another door opens" !

Furthermore, the implication here is he wasn't expected to learn all 150, just most of them (he got fired for not learning enough of them).

You hook up with Prince, you better clear your schedule, clear your mind, get to learnin' material, and prepare to flat out nail them in your sleep. Anyone who auditioned for that spot should have know that going in.
