At one point a while ago, I was in 5 different bands at one time. i figure I had roughly 200 songs in my head, and more were being added all the time. 150 for that level should be a non issue

Prince fires his bassist.

Seems I remember a story about the bassist for Nilly Joel not showing up to sound check/ rehearsals on time or at all. The bassist for the opening band just happened to know Billy's catalogue and was asked if he could fill in for the sound check. He did, Billy fired the other guy and at the time the article the new guy had been in the band for 13 years. Talk about being prepared for an opportunity.
I'm a rank amateur. As such I've never attempted to memorize 150 songs. It seems like a lot. If someone was going to pay me well to do it full time, hell yeah I'm on it! I think I could with that kind of motivation. That's what being a pro is.
There are plenty of cats out there that could manage to lock down 150 songs and play the part, so why would Prince - or any other paying gig for that matter - settle for anything less?
To be fair though im sure about half of these Prince has no intention of ever playing live. Of course............you'd have to know which ones these are.
Prince should require that everyone knows all his released songs plus his vault stuff.
I imagine that would be around like a 1000 songs. I mean WHAT IF at some point live he wants to dig out a number he wrote, recorded and put in the vault one drunken night in 1984?

I'd love to be fired by Prince. That means I would've had to be good enough to be hired by him at some point.
I'm sure his friends informally called him Prince even when he was the artist formerly known as Prince.
Prince should have made her/him audition all 300 songs if that's what he expected. He can't count on 40 year old sea hags with chops to carry him through the rest of his career.

At what point do we consider the blog referenced in the original post in this thread idle tabloid-level rumour-mongering gossip? 'Cause I'm seeing absolutely no supporting information... Some people -like- the attention you get from shouting 'fire' in a crowded theater...

I think it would be far easier to learn 150 Prince songs than 50 Frank Zappa songs. Plus, Zappa used to require the whole band to be able to play all of the songs at faster tempo.
Prince is prince, love him or hate him, if you work for PRINCE it might have been in the guys best interest to learn the material forward and backwards,
It should also be noted that Prince goes through bassists like Spinal Tap goes through drummers. He always seems to keep Rhonda in rotation like some secret relief hitter. I personally think he should just play the damn bass himself.
