Way back when, I sorta thought Prince wasn't all that, but that changed after I saw him live. I saw him only a few weeks ago, and he's still on top of his game. Anybody who's had a decades-long recording and perfoming career in this day and age has to be doing something right.

FWIW, I've never seen anybody who starts a "______ sucks" thread create and/or share any music that's better than the material of the person they're slamming.

When Prince's "1999" came out 24 years ago it made a BIG impression on EVERYONE that I knew! And that was his 5th album! The one that REALLY brought him nation-wide fame . . .

I don't care much for his music, but he clearly is very talented. Further, I gained huge respect for him when he did the Superbowl gig in the rain. There was no diva crap, he just went out and did the gig like it was sunny and 70 degrees. Whatever you say about him, he's a pro.

His live shows are incredible, too. Last time I saw him he busted out some of Stanley Clarke's "Lopsy Lu" during his bass solo...

Check out his playing on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the 2004 RRHOF show. He really starts letting go around the 4:00 minute mark. The man has some serious chops. Wish he'd showcase them a bit more often.

Oh he does. Become a member of his website and you'll be privy to quite a few records (non mainstream) that he sells privately. Quite a few of them are Jazz records. And he plays every damn instrument on them! Seek and ye shall find!

I love his first few albums. The, Little Red Corvette, 1999, Darling Nikki, Purple Rain days were the best. But then his music really started to suffer. I don't care that he went sideways on everyone and changed his name to a symbol. I don't care if he has a preference for drinking champagne from a man's hat. I don't care about his personal life. But his music went to crap after a while. And in my opinion, it never recovered.

+1,000! IMO, Prince and Stevie Wonder are the two greatest composers of the Rock 'n Roll Era. Of course, I will not argue with anyone who want to put Lennon & McCartney at the top.
