It's a joke. There's no bass in the song.

I cover that with my 80’s band and I play a very muted Ab to Gb thump to accompany the kick. Almost dead note. Its makes a huge difference live vs no bass

I just had to go look,cuz I'd heard that an original version was out. But all I found is an account by Dez Dickerson,Prince's guitarist at the time, concerning the removed bass line...Which got recycled for the song 17 Days and used in both for some live shows.
