Prince's music

If you have any desire, check out some of his stuff in the last ten years, beginning with 3121, about. A little more experimental, a little less "pornographic." Some interesting collaborations. I keep suggesting Lotusflow3r in this thread, 3rdeyegirl is good too.
This is interesting.

People give me songs to try from various artists all the time. I'll hit youtube and give them a listen. But in the case of Prince songs, I have a very difficult time actually finding the songs. And when I do they are usually low quality live recordings. 'supwidat?

One of the best things about Talkbass is that it widens my horizons. I remember reading the reverent posts of Dio fans when he died. I had heard his music, but I had never really listened to it. After reading their posts, I went back and really listened. My goodness, Dio was a powerful singer! It was metal, and not my favorite music, but Ronnie Dio had a gift. Hopefully, open minded people are saying that about Prince.
And with both of those guys, figure that the reason why they may not sound unique to a new listener is that bunches of other people heard them and imitated them.

He has a legal team that scouts/monitors the Internet for unauthorized postings of his music/likeness/videos and quickly issues cease and desists to remove them. It's a perpetual game of whack-a-mole that they've become very good at.

No wonder I'm not familiar with his more recent music.

I've not had Television since 1997 and don't listen to "top 40" radio stations since around 1990. I don't do internet ads. Record stores are dead. How am I supposed to get exposed to his stuff?

It's odd that I'm familiar with a lot of artists that made it big in that time frame. I love Dire Straits, Talking Heads, Pink, Taylor Swift, Dave Matthews Band and many others. All of those I found through word of mouth. Prince just went away for me - until he died.

He was very controlling about the distribution of his music. Anything on YouTube was immediately taken down. No streaming services. If you want his music, you have to buy it. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Except that means it was not marketed to me.

Also, I'm listening to a prince "list" on youtube right now. Only heard one song that impressed me. He was good at being "different" and trying new things, but a lot of them don't work.

There was a lot of word of mouth a few years ago about a song called Single Lady. I watched youtube videos of guys dancing to it before I had ever heard the song. Then one day I actually listened to it. It is one of the most musically impressive songs I've heard for a long time. There is so much dissimilar stuff going on in that song, musically, and yet it works beautifully.

Then I saw the actual video. It was interesting, but kinda damaged the song for me.

I discovered a while back that though I have no talent nor desire to write music, I seem to be a natural "arranger". It's probably why I appreciate Taylor Swift songs so much. Prince does some OK stuff, but so did Grand Funk and The Partridge Family. :D

I heard Somebody's Somebody on XMSirius the Prince Tribute channel on the groove chnl 50. Had never heard it before. It was from the Emancipation LP. That song really struck a chord with me...so slick !

Emancipation is one of my favorite albums by Prince. A lot to digest at 3 CDs and likely could have been condensed to one absolutely killer single CD but it really has some great songs overall.

The aforementioned Somebody's Somebody, Jam of the Year, Right Back Here in My Arms, Get Yo Groove On, Courtin' Time (the first five songs of the first CD), We Gets Up, Damned if I Do, Can't Make You Love Me (remake of Bonnie Raitt), Dreamin' About You, The Holy River, Face Down, Da, Da, Da, One of Us (Joan Osbourne).

Great overall.

Are you referring to Beyonce's "Single Ladies?"

That's so interesting that you didn't care for the video. I thought that the video was brilliant: actual dancing with really long takes and a camera that's moving in and around the dancers. And in black and white. It was actually an homage to a Bob Fosse dance from the 1960's. It's one of the few contemporary songs/videos that I "get."

Actually, the video fascinated me, technically. It was ground breaking as well. It's hard to put into words my "emotional" response to the video. Think of it as a person that has many positive traits but some negative ones. It was how the video made me "feel" about the artist that bothered me. It was truly groundbreaking, though. I just liked the song better without the video.
