An update: The second of Keith's 10-strings, which you see in natural wood above, is now fully painted and finished. Paul Slagle painted it in a beautiful deep metal flake blue. About the deepest metal flake I've seen, like a starry night sky. Paul does amazing work.

The second one also has the pickups I made, basically 5-string variants of my AMB-2 Scroll Bass pickups. They are significantly more powerful and have a wider range top and bottom than the pickups in Jeff's, the first one. The low B string thunders like a church organ. It's an amazing instrument to hear. When Keith was setting it up a few days ago, his ferocious guard dog Chip was standing there trembling with a row of hair on his spine straight up! That low frequency is the sound of something big and evil. We told him that it was Bunnyzilla outside.

Keith's going to be taking some good pictures of it in a few days, and will probably be listing it on Reverb next week.

Good, now using the power of the internet I'm starting a protest to get Dean to make the edge hammer 10-sting bass again and you can help simply vote on the poll and I'll contact dean when we get lots of votes and hope it goes well.

Yeah, there really aren't many 10-strings out there. Only a couple of larger companies made them, and they didn't make many. Expensive to build, hard to sell, warranty problems, customers not really thrilled with them.

And they are tough instruments to build, even for small custom builders like us. I worked with Keith on those two that he's built so far, and I can tell you that they were complicated. A lot of real engineering and machining. Easily twice the labor of a comparable 5-string. That's why they are expensive.

The blue one is sitting here unsold for about a year. Disappointing after all the work we put in. It's a stunning instrument to play, way beyond an 8-string. The low B and octave B combo roars like nothing else. But, it's just too expensive for most players to buy, for a bass that is basically a novelty. We have all the tooling, and can build more if we get orders, but we haven't gotten any. The project was a technical success, but market isn't there for it. There's a lot of that in this business.

That's how I did it and I looked for about 5 years and didn't know anything about search tempest until within the last 10 months or so. So all I can say is stick with it. Search Tempest for me was the best way to find something on CL. The hard part was convincing the seller on CL you weren't out to rip them off. I've bought 5 out of area basses from CL this way.

The added 'plus' of mine is that it is autographed by Dean Zelinsky and Elliot Rubinson both of which have been verified by Dean Guitars

ST for CL is much more difficult to deal with now. They've made it intentionally unintuitive and frustratingly tedious. But I will continue the hunt.

Hi everyone, while looking for 10 string basses, I found this Giulio Negrini bass. He is an Italien Luthier working out of Lausanne Switzerland. He specializes in metal and extended range guitars mostly, which cost between 3000 and 6000 Euros. This bass is not only cool because it is ten string octave, but it is a fanned fret model as well !! Here are two videos: , . I think the sound in the videos are terrible and very dissonant instead of chimey, but maybe the guy wants it that way. FYI, my buddy Keith Horne has developed and is now building 10-string basses. I make up the hardware and pickups for them. They are really good basses. We put a lot of work into making them play and sound better than any of the others out there. In particular, we got them to have exceptional clarity on the bottom end. Not mushy at all. The low B roars.

The first one, the purple one, was built for Jeff Pilson (Foreigner, Dokken), who is a long time 10-string player. Jeff has at least one Dean 10 in his collection, and he says Keith's 10-string is the first one that he really likes the sound of.

The second one that Keith built is actually available for sale. It's assembled and tested out, but not finish-painted yet. It's in natural wood right now, but could be finished out to any color. Here's a few pictures of them.

Yeah, I can vouch for that. It has the clearest, best sounding low B of any bass I've ever played. Paired with the octave B, it's frightening.

Keith still has the blue one available for sale, and Jeff still loves the purple one.
