More just a personal preference by me. I find it hard to play with drop tuning. I don't mind when other bands use it.

Also, what's with a lot of you talking about breakdowns as if that's the most important thing? A song should be much more than just the breakdown, unless you're one of these crap bands who have a breakdown for the verse, then a breakdown for the chorus, put another breakdown under the solo... but then that's just terrible.

I'm not completely against breakdowns, I mean Slayer sometimes put them in their songs, but it'll be a small section of the song, and they only tune to Eb I think, so you don't really need to detune that much to get a heavy as f*** breakdown...

Sorry for the rant, we should all just get along and play! :bassist:

This thread isn't about telling people what music should be and how it should be played, it's asking who uses drop tunings and why. Unless you've listened to all of our bands, you can't say what everyone's music sounds like.

In my hardcore band, i prefer tuning drop C because i can play the same chord progressions and riffs the same way as the guitarists, and it's easier that way so i can concentrate on other things. Sure, I could tune standard and play the same things in different positions, and it be more difficult and technical, but nobody else will notice or care when i'm just standing there instead of putting on a show. In my rock band the guitarist plays drop C, and i'm tuned standard EADG because i don't really need to be any lower.

I have my main bass in drop c at the mo and im really hating the tension on the low c. This is the first time ive been using the brand of strings i have at the moment.(elixers) so its probably just a case of getting a thicker gauge string set. Normally id prefer to be in the same tuning as the guitarists, but that said i only have ever played 4's so dont really have any other option for hitting those lows.

I always stay standard tuning, otherwise the change in string tension just irritates me. I'm using 4, 5 and 6 string basses.

... although the 4 stringers have Hipshots on the E string, but I never drop them below D.

Just my preference.
