I may have missed it in a previous post, but where do you usually keep your Gain knob?I can tell you the tube pre into the QSC power amp did not make for a very convincing all-tube substitute (nothing really does IME).
I also A/B'd the Quilter against the PF-50T on a country gig with a P-bass with flats and the real tube amp won hands down for old-school thump. (Driving the line in with a good tube pre might get the Quilter halfway there - I'll look in to it...)
I'll use the PF-50T with my upright on a Jazz gig if I know the volume is going to be moderate and I want a more organic "blossoming" quality to the notes. I use the Quilter if I want something more predictable that I know won't run out of steam, or when I want to keep that extra hand free for load-in.
If you haven't tried it at higher settings, you should. Might make you rethink the superiority of the Ampeg.
