That being the case, I'd love to know why all the pots with detents on both my old Eden heads became noisy, crackling as they went over every notch.

Has the design changed in the last 20 years?

I have 2 Eden WT amps.
Everything has changed in the last 20 years.
Mind you. None of my Eden amps has noisy pots...... much..... yet...... I think.
The yearly servicing was clean all pots and jacks annually with them suckers. Deoxit it all round

Maybe it's the quality of pots that Eden spec'd.

I don't doubt you. But, I'm currently holding a Demeter VTBP M 800D and a DG900, so I don't exactly feel a pressing need for another amp. Particularly considering how much (well, little) I play, as a hobbyist.

One of my rigs was a Mike Pope preamp into a 1500w amp. It had no shortcomings. Then I tried a BB800. The rack rig paid for it with lots of cash to spare.

I've got to admit, I like the detents. I didn't think I would, but for me, they make it super easy to get repeatable results, and I've never had a problem with feeling like I needed to be in between any two positions, however, I can understand how it might annoy somebody else. By the way, I also love the big chicken head knobs, and the sloped front panel, and....... well...... you get the idea : )

The resistive element and wiper are the same as in an equivalent non-detented pot. There are no detents in the electrical part of the pot.

But also attached to the shaft is typically either a toothed or a slotted wheel with a small spring-loaded ball that you can feel gently drop into place as you turn the shaft. That's what creates the feel of detents. The spacing of the teeth or slots in the wheel and the size of the ball determines how many detents there are over the sweep of the pot. Some have 11, some have 21, and so on.

I admit when I first felt them on the BB800 I thought they were cool. But now that I've used it, I find them limiting.

I'm with ya, doesn't bother me at all, I rarely change the settings to begin with on any amp, set it and forget it. other than playing a weird room, you're not supposed to be tweaking these all day anyway....get out and play!!!!!!!!!!!!

In what way? There is so much minutiae in gain staging starting with the basses and everything else that goes into the chain, does half a detent point make that much of an impact? Not saying it couldn't, it very well could, but I haven't experienced that type of reaction to close tweaking settings- yet...
Edit: When I worked in analog studios back in the day, the thing we loved about the detents in gear was the ability to get a closer recall to settings and to document settings more clearly. Likely a factor in the creation of this type of pot.

Even on the gig? I can't imagine it needing to be that finely tuned live. I've got about 15 gigs on mine since I bought it a few weeks ago and I've never had a problem. I guess YMMV.

I care zero percent about the detents. If you cant get a good sound without continuously variable knobs, you've got some other problem going on, either auditory or psychological.. ;-)

Between the gain & master (not tho mention BG volume control), should not be much of an issue - IMO.
That said, I would prefer graduations that aren't more than 2dB.
Don't know what they are on the BB.

I mainly play at lower volumes, and I've found some amps can get frustratingly touchy even without detents. I'd possibly be annoyed by having detents which aren't fine enough subdivisions. Of course, I haven't played one of these, so it could be a non-issue, for all I know. YMMV

yes. on a recent gig, the depth notches were a little too much at the +2, and not quite enough on #1. I made do. ;-)
