Sequence of Events: Read the title of thread. Have thought about “Rick 4004” - never heard of it. Scroll down to bottom of first page. Write my comment concerning my thought.

I didn’t (and tend not to, in general) read through every post of a multi-page thread before writing. It might be your style but it isn’t mine.

Edit: Assuming the title was factual? Shame on me.

The 4004 is the model that corrected all the dopey spoilers on the 4003, from bad bridge to finger-gouge pit.

But as with Fender's attempts to improve the product, the consumers don't want it. They like their Coke classic, and big fins on their Caddy.

Well it didn't do only that as the look of the instrument is pretty different from that of the 4003 series whereas i do not think I may immediately like the neck pickup position ... too necky ehm..

They were custom designed and made with the basses at hand by Dane Wilder,who did all the mods to both basses.

Thanks! That one was my first 4004. Its been through a lot of changes since i got it.
(Swapped gold hardware for chrome,VVT w push pull pots for coil taps,professionally defretted).
It was one with the lowered pickup positions too.

That isn’t saying much but if I were to get a Ric I’d get a 4004

it had a working bridge...

That's the only Ric I would consider. It has a sensible bridge.
Saw the guy from Dead Quiet playing one. In a club.

If I ever get another 4004, it will be a model like this one. There's something about a walnut core with a maple top and bottom. Beautiful.

It's taken me a few years to "come around" to the 4004, but they have grown on me. I would like to try one before taking the plunge though. It's unfortunate that they're even rarer in the UK than the 4003/4003s

Considering a 4003s is around £2300 new, a 4003 is around £2600 new, and a 4004 is around £2800 new, at current market rates £1 = $1.38. Therefore that is equivalent to $3174 for a 4003s, $3588 for a 4003, & $3864 for a 4004.

As much as I'd love to, I'll not be rushing out to buy a new Ric any time soon!!!

I can't be the only one who doesn't like the 4003, but does like the 4004.
4004 was the only thing that had me interested. If they stop making them,,,

I agree. My 4003 is probably my least-played bass. Shoulda bought a 4004.
