R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

So sad that she had to go this far without help. Because the world seems to find this somewhat acceptable behavior for celebrities, they more often than not, will never get the help that they so desperately need to overcome their demons. And instead of getting help, the world allows their lives to become little more than front page headlines on the supermarket tabloids, while we all sit back and shake our heads.

As is all too often the result, we had to loose another great talent that should have been helped. RIP AMY.

Some of the comments posted on this thread are sad, but I guess we pick and choose what we'll be self-righteous about.

To those that pontificate:

She was someone's daughter and someone's friend as well as a fellow human, show some respect and please save your psychobabble-super-judgement for the other threads.

If that was aimed at me, I didn't mean to come across as just disregarding her life as "one more statistic" by any means! Your post is what I'm talking about, how everyone hinges upon every move that a person like Amy Winehouse makes, and yet regards her as a toy for their own entertainment, not a person with a soul, hopes, and dreams and then just kicks them while they're down through gossip magazines and crap like TMZ.... It makes me very sad for her family and her friends. They will be in my prayers.

I think it's pretty much a given for all the reasons I stated. It doesn't really matter if you like her music or not. She was very talented, had a unique image that is instantly recognizable and died too young without fulfilling her potential. Add to that being a member of the "Dead at 27" club and it pretty much guarantees it.

Do a little research. A LOT of people tried to help her. She did indeed go to several rehabs. Her management sent to St Lucia for six months in 2009 to dry out. Her father was very involved in trying to help her. It didn't work because SHE couldn't get past it. Ultimately she died because of her actions, not because someone else didn't stop her. Addiction doesn't work that way.

I saw a couple of videos of her probably when she was just starting out, and/or before she started going downhill and holy crap, she had some curves and actually looked good. She sang great as well. What a shame. Addiction is a disease, but one you choose. Once that monkey is on your back its very difficult to get it off.

^ This + another 1. Time will tell whether her music holds. I'm sure there were people who could have posted the same judgmental substance abuse flames about Janis, Jimi, and Jim had the internet been around then. I know of many people who still think of Morrison as a mediocre talent. Does premature death cause us to look at their contributions in a different light, i.e. had they survived, would we still be thinking of them as iconic? Or would they have gone the way of many other bands who simply faded away?

I say this because until today, I had never heard an Amy Winehouse song. Yeah, probably living under a rock or listening to too many jam-type bands. But I liked what I heard. Now is that because she's gone, or do I simply like it on its own merit?

Anyway, 27 is way too young to die. No matter what you think of her or what we will think of her in 10-20 years, she was troubled (aren't we all in some regard?) and is now Resting in Peace.

Not to over analyze it......

But if you ever sit and listen to the Frank disc, you'll get the feeling she wrote from a deep dark place. Once she got over Frank, (the bulk of the album is her ripping on an ex boyfriend) she hit a long stretch of writer's block. The substance abuse began to show just before she started working on Back to Black. I really think she felt the drugs and alcohol got her back to that dark place that she wrote from. Sad really.

I think that's a VERY insightful theory. Sad, but I think you may be exactly right about this.

Both of her albums were written based on her personal depression and heartbreak. That's why the songs resonate as true to so many people. FYI Frank was not the name of her boyfriend at the time. She stated in many interviews that she named it after Sinatra. Her father loved his music and they sang his songs together when she was a child. I also think that it's a pun on the word as in being frank about her life. Back To Black was written after her breakup with the man who would eventually return and become her husband. It was after that recording that the hard drugs started to effect her behavior and eventually her performances. The writer's block you speak of came way after Back To Black. Up until then, she was a prolific songwriter.

I was not aware of her music for a long time. I was VERY aware of pictures of her looking like every bad example you could think of. I knew she was allegedly a popular and possibly talented artist, but I had no evidence to go on in regards to that.

Then the radio station I listen to started playing some of her stuff. 'Tanqueray' in particular struck me as better than I'd expect from the image in my head based on herr pictures.

I doubt I'll ever be a fan, but it's sad that only weeks before she died I actually found myself able to give her a chance, musically.

I now believe that before the drugs, she was an actual valid talent. Whereas after the drugs, she was the wreckage of a valid talent.

Sad. RIP Ms Winehouse.
