R.I.P. Amy Winehouse

Both of her albums were written based on her personal depression and heartbreak. That's why the songs resonate as true to so many people. FYI Frank was not the name of her boyfriend at the time. She stated in many interviews that she named it after Sinatra. Her father loved his music and they sang his songs together when she was a child. I also think that it's a pun on the word as in being frank about her life. Back To Black was written after her breakup with the man who would eventually return and become her husband. It was after that recording that the hard drugs started to effect her behavior and eventually her performances. The writer's block you speak of came way after Back To Black. Up until then, she was a prolific songwriter.

No, I realized that wasn't his name......

And FYI..... not sure when the interview was done, but this is from Today Music:

"Frank" was followed by a slump during which Winehouse broke up with her boyfriend, suffered a long period of writer's block and, she later said, smoked a lot of marijuana.

"I had writer's block for so long," she said in 2007. "And as a writer, your self-worth is literally based on the last thing you wrote. .. I used to think, 'What happened to me?'

"At one point it had been two years since the last record and (the record company) actually said to me, 'Do you even want to make another record?' I was like, 'I swear it's coming.' I said to them, 'Once I start writing I will write and write and write. But I just have to start it.'"

I have really enjoyed TB for some time now. The jerks on here are driving me away however as the forum has regularly degenerated into a .......

I have seen way to many of these in my personal life and am SICKENED by those that believe they have the righteous perspective and are therefore better than.... someone else

This site needs more MODERATORS and stricter enforcement of the forum rules if this kind of behavior continues

Can you even imagine how you might feel if she was YOUR child/friend, etc...

See that line?

The next post below that line that's inflammatory or disrespectful will be earning infraction points. This thread is, as someone just posted, a Rest In Peace thread - not an opportunity for you to disparage the memory of someone. You don't like Winehouse's music? Don't post here.

1+ Shoulda been at the beginning of the thread

And I'm not a fan of Rock and Roll, let Amys dead all be a lesson for all of you who listen to the Devils music, cause we all know what that leads to.

Seriously? Of all the posts I've read in this thread, this is the most ....ludicrous? Yeah, that applies.

For you, much like some others, this site is not a platform for preaching. Plenty of other sites for that, find one.

It's unfortunate that she couldn't find the self-control necessary to kick her habits. However, neither the word "legend" nor "victim" should be used in this thread.

i wasn't her fan, but...

anyone can be a legend or a victim by definition. please look up the root meanings of these words.

legends are simply stories of people, places, and things that take events of said articles into historic account. be it a local legend or whatever. you could be a legend in your little world. Amy's world was much larger and more stories are exposed, whether true or false.
the word is not something reserved for a Deity.

now i'm curious what you guys define a legend as being, but NOT here. is there a due-date??? when did the last legend occur???

I was not a fan, but I sure hate to see any person get caught up in drug abuse and die. It is a disease that creates a biological dependence. Like any other disease, some will survive or be cured. Some can only manage the disease, and some will not survive it. Because of the medical aspect, I am not judgemental about the failure to overcome. What I do criticize is the decision to ever start using at all.

Another victim of our society's unhealthy obsession with and worship of celebrities.... :scowl:

So true. I don't think I can name you a Winehouse tune - she's not where my musical interests lay.

Still, upon hearing of her passing, I immediately recalled Dick Cavett's comment on Bobby Fischer's descent into madness:

"No one under 30 should be subjected to fame."

It should be noted that cause of death has not been determined.

Her substance abuse contributed to her death. I did not think her singing was anything special, however any time a human being dies, especially such at so early an age, and possibly by their own hand, it's tragic. It really is. And as opinionated as I may be, a person died and it appears she was alone.

She must of been so scared.

Perhaps you should inform the authorities. They still haven't determined the cause.
Of is not a verb.
