I was just saddened to read that Charnett Moffett has died of a heart attack at only 54 years old. A terrible loss of a great talent.

Double Bass R.I.P. Charnett Moffett

Oh man, just awful. I first heard him at the Village Gate when he was just a little boy... maybe 8? He was playing a little bass and though not a virtuoso yet was just tearing it up with his proud Dad on drums. Percy Heath and Charlie Haden were in the audience too and likewise knocked out.
Terrible news. Condolences to his family and friends.
On a selfish note: Am I really so old that the so-called "young lions" are now dying off?
Heard him with McCoy Tyner years ago and thought "I don't even understand what was going on there". He was amazing and unique.
What a tremendous player, person, and…. loss. So shocking.
Got to see him a number of times in NY before COVID, and beyond the mind blowing playing, he was always so engaged with the crowd. Heh, one time at Smalls he walked over and said “you must be a bass player right?”

Sadly, yes. I'm in the same boat. The good news is I don't feel the need to compete with teenagers who can blow me off a stage in 12 bars.
Yeah, I just found out about this!!!!! Charnett was an incredibly gifted and skilled bassist and composer. I was hooked on him since his first solo release Net Man.
