I played on this bass for a bit at the Scottsdale AZ GC a while back. (Not the same bass as Tye Zamora's BTW). It was actually pretty well set up. I liked the wide string spacing. The tone was clear and well balanced. I couldn't get past the enormous price tag and the exotic furniture look. :D

my 1965 pbass. (yes it has been routed and refined but it is a nitro-cel finish). I was told it is 1 of 30 Leo made in his garage prior to the sellout and the give away is the "Burnt orange) rosewood used on the fingerboard. This batch of 30 was just released into the stock without any special designation except the fingerboard. I just know it plays and sounds like a million bucks. Fenders Gary Waugh said about 5 years ago that it is the top 10 basses that ever came out of Fender. I traded 2 Shure Brothers 100 watt mono pwer amps for it on 8/11/83

Currently winging it's way to me from Japan :smug:, a Fender Custom Shop '61 P Bass replica in Lake Placid Blue :eek:.
Unusual feature is the custom colour.

I've been frantically scouring the internet, trying to work out whether this a team-built model, which was offered to the Japanese market, or whether it's one-off custom build :hmm:!?

If anyone has any knowledge about this, I'd love to here it :).

Hi Joe :).

I'm not sure if your comment was in response to my post, or not :hmm:. If it was, then I can tell you that Ishibashi are not showing this bass on their website now, because that's where I bought it and so it's sold (to me):smug:.

Also, there is a Fender Japan website, but it only lists Japanese made basses and this one's an American built, Custom Shop bass.

Guess I'll just have to be content with playing it and forget about the history of it ;).

I'd be willing to bet the price you paid would dictate whether it's a one-off or if it still falls under the team-built umbrella. Either way, it's the only one I've seen in that color.

It seems a lot of cool custom shop stuff uncommon in the US makes its way to Japan. I had a bookmark which I found out today was out of date :( that showed a NOS '62 and a NOS '63 P-bass both in sunburst and a NOS '62 P in Fiesta Red. I was able to find this link, though, showing a time machine and a masterbuilt '63: Invalid Link Removed

I ordered a custom team-built '62 P myself last January that I should hopfully be enjoying sometime this year.

:) Thanks for the reply Jason and for the link.

It would appear that I paid about 60% of the price of a new "Closet Classic" for my used "NOS" P Bass (confused yet ;)?), so I think it's safe to say that it won't be a Master Built instrument (the Jason Smith "Relic" '63 P Bass on that website costs about 250% of what mine cost).

That said, my NOS bass has some considerable damage to the bottom of it :hmm:, which doesn't concern me too much, but will have certainly dented the re-sale price ...

I guess I'll just have to wait and see what the certificate says and post some better pictures of it when it arrives :).

BTW Jason, what spec have you ordered for your Custom Shop '62 :)?

Wow...that ain't exactly NOS anymore, is it? I can't think of any other brand that looks as good with scrapes and dings as Fender though. I love that Lake Placid Blue!

My '62 is going to be 3-tone sunburst with a slab rosewood board. The headstock decal will have the patent numbers under it and I asked for the Pino Palladino pickups and TI flats.

Sounds great :hyper:, especially the two patent numbers under the logo (I didn't realise that they could offer that :)). With the over-wound pickup and the flats, it's gonna be a real "Motown thump machine", should you wish it to be ;).

Looking forward to seeing the pics when it's all done.
