why is the burst funny where the ashtray would be?

The red on some '60s Fender sunbursts can fade over time with exposure to UV light. If the bridge cover was left on it blocked the light leaving a "shadow" of un-faded burst as shown in the photo.

Since the cover is now off I'd expect it to eventually fade over time. I wonder if fading would effect it's value down the road compared to one that's not faded?

The covers were off only for that photo. It lives in its case with its covers on.

I've always thought Antigua looks like the color of hard boiled egg yolks after they've been sitting out for too long.

I guess that Fender couldn't really market it as, "Vintage Yokeburst" though, could they ?

Hey folks - always want to know how different to a typical P do the Elite II's sound. As I said the '82 Special I owned sounded like a P just bigger. Does the bridge pickup add a brightness to the sound? They look very cool.

Here are 3 non traditional ones I`ve owned in the past:

Looks like a standard MIJ Jazz, but the neck is a bit chunkier.
Built during early 90`s called "Silv er series"

One of the lightest basses I`ve played (7 lbs). The aftermarket EMG Jazz pickups gave it a great sound.

Active electronics (based on Kubicki preamp from that era) paired with cheap MIM pickups and bridge.

Finally my main gigging bass.
1999 MIA Fender Jazz "Am.Traditional"

Extended pickguard and knobs with numbers (as in MIM Jazzes). I`ve upgraded the stock pickups to Fender Vintage pups and sounds terrific. It`s like MIA / MIM hybrid.

I don't know if this can be called This bass was made in Japan in 1980 or 1981.

Can somebody clarify this for me? I was under the impression that Fender didn't make basses in Japan until 1982, when they started up Squier. Was I incorrect?

Sting signature series precision bass, not entirely uncommon, but I am yet to see another one that came with the metal guards over the pickup and bridge:

now if only i could get it signed....

This is kind of rare - it's an early '66 Mustang Bass (first year), and they hadn't yet made any "Mustang Bass" decals. So the factory clipped the word "BASS" from the Bass V, as I recall, and put it together with a Mustang (guitar) decal.

Side note: it frustrates me that when you look up official dealer info for the Mustang Bass reissue, they state that it's "a reissue of the classic Mustang Bass, first introduced in 1964". Off by two years, and it's still being promoted that way (ever since the new reissue came out several years ago).
