Rare recordings of Jaco!

My next upload will be the audio only
companion of the Trilogue-show. I thought
you'd like to have it on cd as well so
you can blast it on your speakers at home
and in you car :)
Unlike the official cd-release of this show, this
version features all the songs as found
on the DVD.

I will post it in approximately 30 minutes,
after I've eaten dinner.

Here are 4 of the 6 tracks from the album
"Curtain Call"( I couldn't find the remaining two).
It is a live soundboard recording from October
of 1986, and features Jaco on bass, Brian Melvin
on Drums and Jon Davis on keyboards/piano.
Jaco was very lucid here, and this is considered
his last great documented performance.As you know, only under a year later this giant of music
died tragically from the beatings he received from
the harsh encounter of the most moronic bouncer
in history.

I should probably listen to some of the older stuff. I've never been a big Jaco fan, but I'm still pretty sure that it was him I saw with Wayne Cochran and the CC Riders back in the early '70s. If it was, he was awesome in that setting. I've listened to a few of the Joni Mitchell things, and I have to say that he was better in a song context than in an open improv. I know, it's heresy that I speak...

I'd like to add my thanks to you for helping to ensure that more players can be inspired by Mr. Pastorius' talented approach to coaxing music from our chosen instrument.

After listening to the Brian Melvin songs you provided, I've ordered all three of his CDs that Jaco played on and should have them in a week or so. I tried to get these CDs years ago, but the source was out of stock at the time and never notified me that they had gotten them in again. Thanks again, Jazzomaniac. Looking forward to parts 2 & 3 of the Trilogue DVD. :)

I can see that a some people have downloaded
the Trilogue-DVD, either the complete show
or parts of it. What do you think of it?


However, I'm surprised that so few have
chosen to download it. If you really care
about Jaco's music, this is a must have in
your collection!

Thanks for the reminder. I'm downloading all of the files now and I'll report back on how well they work under Ubuntu 10.04.

OK then. I downloaded each of the files in the above link individually via gwget (the GUI to wget, an excellent download manager which comes with Ubuntu) due to its ability to resume downloads after dropped connections caused by server resets etc.

All the files appear to work fine in Totem Movie Player after the additional steps required to enable DVD movie playback in Ubuntu have been taken.

In Ubuntu's desktop menu bar:

- System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager, type ubuntu-restricted-extras in Synaptic's Quick search box and install it.

- next, follow the instructions found at RestrictedFormatsPlayingDVDs then reboot.

BTW. As of Ubuntu 10.04 ubuntu-restricted-extras installs OpenJDK Java 6 in place of sun-java6.

A neighbour of mine reported that he couldn't get the java-based games at Pogo.com to play on the Edubuntu 10.04 PC I gave him. It turned out that OpenJDK Java 6 was the problem. On the chance that it may cause other java problems, here's one way to replace OpenJDK Java 6 with sun-java6:

- quit Firefox if it's running

- go to System-->Administration-->Software Sources and make sure the Partner repository is checked under third-party software.

- in Terminal run sudo apt-get update (to update the lists of software available from the Ubuntu repositories)

- in Applications-->Ubuntu Software Center remove OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime (doing so will automatically remove its other two dependencies)

- in System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager check mark and install sun-java6-plugin (doing so will automatically check mark and install its required dependencies)

- reboot
