So far this Winter, thinking about Plan C is a requirement.
You know, if Rat Fur is such a problem for cats, perhaps we should try cat fur, so long as we don't have a rat problem.
WWF will tell you it's hard to get support for animals that aren't cute or majestic.
I wouldn't fear the rat lobby.
Even if rat fur was as good as Chinchilla fur, don't bet on your cab sales increasing.
This reminded me, just when I got back from active duty I got a job cleaning carpet. Wife called about a few blood stains. When i get there the story was, husband got drunk and cut his hand on a bottle. Blood from the entryway up the stairs and covering the carpet covered bathroom. Looked like a murder scene! Standouts of that... blood doesnt easily come out of carpet even with professional products, women should wear a bra under a translucent shirt before they invite strangers inside, and make sure the teenage boy clears his porno stash before asking to move the bed and clean underneath!
Dang... forgot to tie it in with the music gear. They did in fact, have a lot of carpet covered PA equipment in the garage, which looked in poor condition from cats and loading in.
Any drums of acid?

EDIT: too slow, so I'll add rats & mice are vectors for other diseases, too. They have positive qualities, but they'll never be more popular than tigers or elephants.

I absolutely hate it. That being said, I didn't vote because if I liked the sound of a cabinet and it only came in rat fur, I'd still buy it (and do own some). But I'd still hate it and wish the mfg hadn't used it. So I guess my only choice in the 3 would be indifferent but that doesn't accurately reflect my feelings on it.
Rats still carry plague, but most of us are immune. The last case I read about (in a medical journal), was an American Indian sweeping up rodent dookey and inhaling plague virus. Cat Fur would be safer.
Yeah that deep red rat fur is good stuff. Best rat fur. I got two S10 cabs covered with it. But prefer bed liner.
I've never had a problem with it. But I don't have any of the other problems that tend to make it worse.

Seems to me people who hate rat fur but buy the cab anyway signal the manufacturer that rat fur is acceptable. Until sales sag they'll continue their merry way. Personally, if I find the aesthetics of any gear visually offensive, I'll look elsewhere. A theory I proposed elsewhere on TB is the possibility ugly sells to a demographic segment that bassists inhabit.

I assume rat fur is Ozite, or some call it carpet? Not crazy about it, if that what you mean, but for the most part, on cabs anyways, the choices are Tolex, or Ozite?
I've been thinking of ways to remedy the stupidity of my rat fur cabs. Maybe even paint with bed liner with a paint roller or spray gun, or just latex. I figure it will toughen and harden the exterior, and stick or embed easily. Anybody tried that? Another thought is to scorch it, with a disposable iron from a thrift store, or maybe an LP torch. Anyone tried that too?

I would just love to be ensconced in rat fur.The only covering I like better is the old tuck & roll Kustom era stuff.
Love my main cab even with the rat fur. It came supplied with a great, heavy-duty cover that keeps it nice and clean when not in use. The real reason I love it? It's a fantastic sounding piece of kit. For sound like that, I'd even pay for "reliced" (or if that makes you think of lice too much, relic'd) rat fur covering.

I love the durability, but I sold my last rat fur cab when I got my duratex cabs, which are so much better looking. Sound comes first, but there are 100,000,000 different options out there at every price level nowadays.

Rats have been added to the CITES restrictions on international trade. Currently, this only applies to rats from Brazil and Madagascar, but is expected to expand to ALL rats. Rat fur cabs shipped from overseas suppliers may be delayed or confiscated at the border. You may have problems traveling with your rat fur cabs unless you have documentation that the rats used to make your rat fur were killed before 1979.
When will the madness end?

.my county gets a case or a two a year. The university hospital in unmh handles most of the cases.

I spoke to my local furniture uphostierer, she said do not use chipmunk fur, you'll have treble problems and annoying squeaks.
I was going to say no animals were hurt to compile this thread, but cats have had claws shortened etc.
I'm still laffing about some responses. Spelling errors corrected, I think I hate autocorrect more than fur.
