Here’s my second collab with my son. Glarry P with Colormaxx gloss rich plum and Krylon satin beach glass for the headstock and guard. I wanted something purple but it looked meh with the stock guard and plain headstock. We went a little nuts with the seafoam

We left the electronics stock. It took a setup surprisingly well and I was able to get the action very low. With the pups a little high, it sounds very aggressive. Not bad for like $100 in bass and paint.

Plus the memories are priceless.

Have to? Not necessarily. It should be flat/level or the clear will highlight wherever it is not. It also needs some sort of texture for the clear to grab on to. That ca be a very light texture like a once over with super fine scotchbrite.

Okay. I think I sanded with 320 grit before I applied the last couple of coats of color...I don't know if I have super fine scotchbrite but I can see. I have 0000 steel wool somewhere, though...would that work?

Yup, just gotta be careful of stray strands from the steel wool, otherwise does exactly the same thing.

Someone in my neighborhood was throwing out a Quest Atak bass. I decided to take it and practice on it with Spray paint. I'm only using what I have on hand in the garage
I sanded it down enough for it it to be rough. First coat was Rustolium Grey. Took forever to dry and I put 4 coats. I then put flat black duplicolor, but this is when things got weird. It started developing lightning like cracks. I know forna fact it's not the wood. Anyways, I finished that can and started using Klyron flat back. I'll them continue with Behr flat back. They're all half cans.

Definitely looks like a chemical reaction of some sort. There's a good possibility that the Rustoleum and Duplicolor were not compatible. I always stick to the same brand for all stages when I can.

Yep. Been there got the t-shirt. If you want to try the mixed brands over each other, test it first on a scrap board.

Thanks, yeah That's the most plausible explanation. Good to know because I didn't think of that before, would've been pissed on a real project.

Chemical incompatability between the paint coats.

My suggestion: strip it to bare wood, then seal the wood with an appropriate (not industrial) grain filler, then paint with acrylic enamel. Most automobile touch-up paint is acrylic enamel, and many spray primers are too. The resulting finish will age from handling, as it wears a lot like the old nitro lacquer used on early Fender basses.

I guess I can share this - it's a Cort JB...something. Sanded the clear coat to rough, then primer, then paint, then clear. Sanded to 320 between primer and paint and between every couple of coats of paint. Sanded to 1000 after the last coat of clear. Came out pretty well, I think.

Not sure it has been posted here before, but, since Re Ranch no longer sells product, I've had trouble finding the colors I want to use. Well, recently a friend told me about these guys that do custom colors. Invalid Link Removed They have tons of colors as well as making just about any color if you have the numbers for the color. Same price as Re Ranch. It is enamel, not lacquer but my friend has done two basses with it and both look great. I just ordered a couple cans of this color. Sears Tropi-coral.
