Nope. I wanted to keep it simple. I roughed up the original finish with 280 grit sand paper and then two coats of black spray. After it dried I dialed back the gloss with the 0000 steel wool. I’m not going to relic it but I won’t mind if the finish starts to wear thru naturally with play. Kind of like the old Fender colour respray over the original sunburst. But like all black finishes I will still have to deal with those pesky fingerprints!

Just finished this one. Squier Affinity J in Rust-Oleum 2X French Blue with one can of 2X satin clear, buffed out to matte with 0000 steel wool.

Saw that fella on the ‘verb. Looks great, nice job! That rustoleum is a dead ringer for sonic blue. I love matte finishes.

Is it an already finished bass? If yes, what kinda finish? What finish do you want to paint it? All of these things affect the process.

Alder is tight grained so no need for grain filler. Might wanna use a sanding sealer, or shellac, people here should be able to offer other prep materials. Top coat material (lacquer, poly, etc) will affect what prep material you use. Then prime, flatten, prime, flatten, spray color, maybe flatten between coats, or every so many coats, spray clear, a whole bunch, maybe flatten between some coats, do a final wet sand, and buff it out.

Finished clear on this one today. Squier CV P in Rust-Oleum 2X Coral. Was trying to match Fender Tahitian Coral on the cheap, and it’s very close. I’ll buff it out to matte next weekend and reassemble with an aged white guard.

Finished this one up this morning. Squier CV Precision. Formerly Olympic White with a tort guard, now satin Tahitian Coral with an aged white guard. I ended up not buffing it at all after the satin clear dried, which is a first. It looked good as is, so I saved myself some work and reassembled. It looks (and plays) awesome.

My first attempt at a refinish (and my first attempt at a fretless, and my first attempt at using a waterslide*)...

but thought I'd post it here too as it was this thread that talked me through all the steps to do the refinish.

The original paint was ok, but I wanted a matching headstock and to get rid of the pickguard so I decided to refinish the whole thing.

I used Dupli-color Candy Red Pearl and Septone Acrylic Clear.
It is a long way from perfect, some of the old screw holes are a darker colour than the rest of the body & I sanded through the respray to the old red underneath on one section of an edge; but if you're standing a few steps back you wouldn't know any of that.

Here is the before & after (I still need to finish making the nut and then string it up. Oh and then learn to play a fretless)

*the new neck is a Fender Japan neck and it has fender pickups, so I felt OK putting the fender logo on it. There's no serial number or anything else designed to make people thing it's anything other than a parts build.

I've done it. It's fine as long as you have the proper buffing/polishing equipment, but I prefer Minwax spray lacquer for a gloss clear.
