Had some leftover paint, and I found a Squier Mini P for cheap locally. Had just enough color to finish the body. I also tinted the neck with vintage amber nitro.
I still don't know how to completely eradicate orange peel (especially on metallics), but it looks good overall.

Purple seems to be the 'it' colour lately. Looks good
I think leveling w/o breaking through and then a healthy clear-coat that is leveled flat & buffed.
Just bought a body from the classifieds here that has been previously DIY finished. The previous owner completed the job about 4 months ago, and they used this clear coat:
I’m going to attempt to re-wet sand and polish since it was done too soon after the initial spraying, but it’s still not passing the “fingernail test.” Am I wasting my time to try doing it over, or should I just start over completely?

Fingernail test meaning it's soft? If so, it was probably sprayed too heavily and it hasn't fully cured. Unless you have a heat-booth, it may not sufficiently harden. There are a lot on new products out there (like that one) geared for consumers who want "one stop shopping", like "primer & paint" in one can. Some are better than others, but the same application tact as all rattle-can finishes need to be followed - multiple thin coats.
I would strip it to the wood and redo it. If they made such a basic mistake as wet sanding too soon, who know what else they got wrong. I used Duplicolor lacquer for both the color and clear coats on the guitars I have done
The color actually looks good, but it’s a sparkle finish. I doubt I can salvage it if I start removing clear, but worst case, I’ll strip it. If this clear hasn’t hardened in 4 months, it probably won’t at all. There are deep impressions in the clear from the pickguard and bridge.

Against better judgment, I proceeded with re-sanding and polishing the above mentioned body. It actually turned out pretty well considering how bad the clear looked. Took a LOT of lower grit sanding to flatten it. It's not perfect (not even close), but it looks good overall. A lot of sins are covered by the pickguard, and I plan on adding a bridge cover to hide the impression from the Badass that was on it before.

I did the body and the headstock with 1 can, it was enought for 1 light coat and 3 heavy coats
Going to call this a victory. Friend of mine gave me a pneumatic orbital. Worked up to 3000 wet before using Meguiars M200, used duplicolor GM code Bahama Blue and Spraymax clear
