Reasons behind split pickups in P-Bass setup

as KBD mentioned, the Precision pickup is very comparable to a single coil sound (which many people like) but it doesn't have the noise (which most people hate).

The short but wide individual coils contribute to a different sound than a jazz bass pickup, even humbucking versions, will have.

I think that the fatter and shorter design of the coils and the way the wire subsequently wraps around the magnets is probably as important for frequency response as the fact that you have split bobbins, if not probably more: more note definition around the so-called midrange. Correct me if I'm wrong. A split coil 51p (in line) IMO has averagely more similarities to a single coil 51p (same shape) then a split coil 57p, also because of the way it's positioned.



there was a recent thread of a guy comparing a split P and a single-coil P, and the single P did in fact have a bit more booty, and a crisp treble. but they sounded remarkable similar. so much that differing string choice would likely cause confusion between the two.

I think it was my blind test between the 51p and the Classic 50s:

To my ears, the 57 style one has more focus and definition on the mids and more "clank" and attack around the high mids. The 51 has a rounder and deeper-feeling low end (so, yes, single coils can be bassy) and more airy highs, giving me the perceived feeling of a "bouncier" tone. But yes, they are rather interchangeable (with some differences), each will do the job and if there's one thing I'm positive about is that the body shape and contour influences/impacts me way more, from the player's perspective which you can't deliver through samples.

Yes, I get it's a split coil setup from a P bass, would like to know what the differences are vs a single H pickup. Most bases in my budget and on my wishlist have HH setups but I see a lot of players with the setup (P/J I think) that Victor has on his Fodera.
While looking around and researching is a lot of fun, as a beginner you will quickly find out that the sound of a bass is more influenced by your fingers than by it's pickups. Buy what sounds good to you now, because your tastes will probably change, and it may not be your last bass.
 
The difference is that it sounds like a P bass. If you listen to any song, by any group, since electric bass was invented, about 70% of the time, you'd be hearing a split pickup. Unlike a traditional humbucker in the neck (like on a gibson) or an enlarged one near the bridge (like on a musicman) a split coil pickup in the direct middle of the playing area gives you increased low end, slightly decreased high end, and a very extensive mid range. The positioning also captures a very certain harmonic range.

Traditional humbuckers give off a very honky midrange and kill the highs. They also decrease output.

Single coils lack mid range and low end, and therefore sound very thin. They have increased output, but also have a very shrill high end.

After building the Precision bass, Leo Fender decided that splitting the coil that he had in the bass gave it more of a "bass" tone. It then became the norm, the foundation, and the world renowned standard for electric bass. Yes, there are many different styles and setups now, but the fact still stands true that "a split coil in the sweet spot is an electric fretted bass guitar." The Precision bass. It is still the industry standard.

In a dogmatic sense, what you say is correct.........but, here comes "the but".

Generally speaking, traditional humbuckers have increased output, are not honky or mid range dominant, generally have a fuller and richer sound with some rolled off high end. (My son plays guitar and one time when I was with him, he was playing a Gibson Les Paul with the 2 PAF humbuckers. My son was playing clean. It sounded equally similar to a Fender with single coils.)

I have a real deal 1953 P Bass with the little single coil pickup and it shows 5.6 K ohm on the voltmeter. Although the output is less than the split coil P pickup, the single coil is anything but it is NOT thin in sound, nor does it lack low end and it is not shrill on the high end. It probably helps that it has AlNiCo 2 magnets which were used back then.

The single coil P Bass pickup is VERY RESPECTABLE in producing bass sound and tone. And, it has better definition compared to the split coil. The SCPB is an EXCELLENT sounding bass!

Now, I do not really know about this but it is my guess. So, what I'm gonna say might be completely wrong. Why did Leo make the split coil P pickup? Why did he design it like he did?

Well, back in 1956 Seth Lover of Gibson made the PAF humbucker pickup. Now, if Fender would have made a humbucker similar to it for the P Bass, it would have been a patent infringement. So, Leo coped the humbucking idea with the 2 single coil P pickups with reverse winding and reversed polarity but steered clear of the Gibson PAF design.

This is my theory. It's just a theory. I'd love to be corrected if I am wrong. So, all you Talk Bass Fender experts, chime in please.
 
as far as answering your question...i have no idea Leo's reason for making them. But they do have a unique sound that has become synonymous with electric bass. leo started with the single coil and "improved" on it with the split coil. very similar, and different from a traditional humbucker. the narrower aperture of the pickup likely makes all the difference.
I've been told on TB that Mr fender used two mandolin pickups
 
Between a P bass and an EBMM HH with the neck humbucker solo’d...they are both woody, thick, and have an “old-school” flavor to them but there’s more bite in a split P configuration. The humbucker has less definition in the high midrange and a lot more low mids.

Output is way higher on the EBMM but that’s because of a variety of reasons.

No... if yours do odds are something isn't working right.

They are literally configured to cancel out hum, but to do so in the most perfect sense (never 100%, or else they'd need to occupy the same space) they also need to be angled in the same direction. The more they're angled away from each other, the more noise as the types of interference each pickup is seeing is no longer as similar, and won't null as effectively.
 
There are a few reasons it is designed this way.

The two separate coils hum cancel.
The split design allows for even adjustment under each string by tilting each half to get string to string balance.
They behave like two single coils but are wider and shallower than a J bass pickup and so “see” more of the string giving the sound more girth and punch..

That and the position in the sweet spot give the P Bass it’s signature sound.

If it were really a split "single coil", why are there two individual pickups, in separate individual cases, wired together?

Because we are perverting grammar*, that's why :D

Technically speaking, a single coil is just ONE coil with one single winding. A hum-cancelling J pickup with two coils side-by-side is not a single coil. A hum-cancelling pickup with stacked coils on top of each other (eg: Duncan's custom 51p pickup for Dusty Hill) is not a single coil. Because more coils cannot be just one, I don't know how that can be proved wrong :laugh:.

A Jazz bass or instrument running two single coils together in parallel or series is not outputting a "single-coil" signal.

A so-called noiseless passive pickup cannot be single-coil. But that's where my knowledge might need some backup or confirmation from someone more qualified.

Anyway:

A SINGLE COIL IS JUST AND ONLY... ONE COIL (of wire wrapping a magnet bar or multiple magnet poles)

*in fact, I think that this is merely a language/lost in translation thing, tbh

In order to protect the instrument from all noise induced by EMI it would need two things:
humbucking pickup (split-coil P-type is a humbucker)
proper shielding
