I'm with the others regarding the Ovation; I would go for the Magnum I, myself.Howdy yall!
Just sold my '05 Ric on the verb and got the itch for something weird.
I've got:
Dingwall NG3
'77 4001 Ric
'62 AVRI Jazz
'11 AMStand Jazz
Been thinking Ovation Magnum I or II, Roland G77, or something else. I have about 2k to drop and a hankering for something not covered by what I have. Are DROCs by Dingwall different than NG3's?
Maybe a Dunable if newer is desired? Wouldn't be the same electronics but they have models with similar aesthetics...It’s not a new design, but the Gibson RD Artist was kind of weird: unique body shape, electronics by Moog, and a slightly longer than usual scale. They are around on the used market.
How weird is weird for you? There are a few thousand examples to browse through here:Howdy yall!

I love the idea, but you'd be pushed to find one in budget. New Atlansias start north of $3k. Used ones are very rare indeed.
Edit - one string Solitaires come in under $2k. Ishibashi has a used Atlansia Alien with a dodgy neck for around $2K (including shipping).
Not sure if it's weird, or unique enough for you. But... it's friggin' AWESOME!!! BUILD A BASS. Would something that you could PURCHASE negate the "unique" aspect?
I've built a few. this... so far... is my second favorite. Just so happens that the crappy pics were still in my phone. I'm not a "photo shoot" guy...
Peace,
Marc

[edit] Here's my first, and favorite, so far. I've completed 3 others since. And have 7 more ALMOST done. All of which are out of the ordinary/weird. I'll share the weirdness in a family photo, once they're all complete.

The pickup location is ALL OF THEM!
Those are certainly rad and I'm glad to have yet more to research. Also, lookin weird on stage is a part of it I suppose, but I also mean weird/different than what I've got in a feature sort of sense. The easiest example being the ovations Mudbucker and active setup is not something I have in the arsenal, nor the full on bass synth if the roland. If you can find a good deal on a used Atlansia (edit: Atlansia Oxford HBX2 Active with OHSC, wow! | Reverb Poland is a good deal on the guillotine looking model) those are some of the most thoroughly weird basses out there. Also not sure what they go for these days, as they don't show up often, but a late 70s Bunker would be a great weird bass, and I think the last one I saw was a little under $2000.

Could also scroll through the hundreds of pages of the weird looking basses thread, see what among the really weird stuff is avaialble around $2000 and strikes your fancy. J Douglas and New Perspectives Music also should be closer to $1500 IIRC. The J Douglas Cosmonoid has been sold, but that was probably the weirdest one...

This New Perspectives one is still out there.

Those are the ones that, to me, go well beyond "regular bass with unusual body shape and finish" and into the same thoroughly weird territory as the Roland and Ovations. There's lots more above your price range as well as some stuff like the Westone Rail or Krappy basses well below, but if I had $2000 to blow and wanted to look as weird on stage as possible, those would be at the top of my list.
