recent thread about winning Lotto and Basses ... my experience ..!

I envy you & pity you in equal measure, LOL!

A couple of weeks ago I was standing in the bank with a large sum of money in my hands & it occurred to me that less than half of that money could buy a nice new flamed maple top Rickenbacker 4004!

but alas, when I called the dealer he'd sold it already, and the final price (after tax) would have been just under $2,500!

My initial assumption about the selling price was right, but in the end I found another bass which I think sounds even better for quite a bit less.

I decided to spend the remainder of the money earmarked for a 4004 on enhancing my life.
new Bose speakers
new Michelins on my ride
(still have some money left over, which I'm thinking about blowing on a new amp + cabinet)

but ironically the big change for me was rearranging my life & changing some bad habits

it had some black nylons on it ... so happens , i had a set of black very lightly used nylons laying about . I haven't plugged it in yet .. ha ... played a little - some thumpy fun , time to get out a few different mutes and felt/rubber picks .. i did stick a battery in it , ... i guess i should plug it in and see if it actually works ..?
i have a strange urge to grind down the frets into a fretless .. !!?? most of these i've seen where Made in China ... this was MIK , so i'd guess it might be older .. ??

i think my bass playing, long distance student, cousin Jake will be glad to see this ... had my modded / loaded P-bass body up for sale for about a month ... many folks wanted this or that part ... ?? i had sold the neck , mainly because i'm not really a P-bass fan .!? i prefer Jazz style basses w/P necks .. so i decided to make it even more useless ... found a nice Fender lined rosewood fretless Jazz neck ... i had enough parts/tuners lying around to make it work .. now my P-bass is fretless ..!! ha ... just what i don't need ... but i know my long distance bass student really wants to give fretless a try ..!! someday fairly soon ..!!!!

the above Parts P fretless is gonna get another pup .. MM style Seymour for the bridge .. ! should really widen the tonal palette ... pup found in our Classifieds

gonna start playing again in the near future ( bass/keys/gtr ) ... which means more shopping .. !!

a lot of which is done right here in our Classifieds ... !!! great value and people ...

new slightly used mic on the way ... AKG-D5 , SMB-4a pup on the way . ( our classifieds )

brand new acoustic gtr pup on the way for 73 Alvarez from Sweetwater - Seymour SA-6 mag mic ( former workmates/musician friends work there that i knew in my lotto win days )

new strings for 5 string and some GHS Pressurewound Bronze for the acoustic/electric .

a new wedding ring .. !? what .? yeh , sorta bass /gtr related ... i wanted something that wouldn't constantly be getting scratched up ( gold/silver type stuff is to soft, and i'm tired of polishing ) So i found a really cheap , fret friendly , basically unscratchable option ... = Tungsten .. !
found some cool stuff at ...

ordered a couple Dremel router bits ... yeh , i know ... not the right tool to install a pup ... sorry

just gonna do it ' once in my life ' .. ! and the body is basswood , so it's softer than ash or alder ...

just i'll make a template and take my time ... the MM pup cutout looks pretty easy .... might even spray the black, deglossed by me, body w/ clear satin , as it gets shiny spots from skin oils very easily ..

then i'll get brave and drill a jackhole in my 73 Alvarez ... patience grasshopper ... and try to gently buff out a few scratches and try my hand at ' drop filling ' some clear into a couple small divots ... scrap down , wet sand , polish ... with mostly the wrong tools , of course ... makes things more of a challenge .. !!

This tip may be academic, but it's worth mentioning nonetheless…tape! Specifically, some painters tape or artist's low-adhesive drafting tape to keep your template snugly in place once you have it in your desired location.

P-bass is back together ... new MM bridge pup looks like it was installed by a drunk monkey and a slightly stoned beaver ... !!! i'll never try that again , with all the wrong , or lack of , tools ...

after a quick phase issue re-wire ... it works ... not for a little setup , and then a quick self reminder , that i really don't play fretless .. ha ...

this changes things a little bit ... ruptured tendon in left wrist ... ( surgery has 95% failure rate ) ...

time to be more selective about what i play , how much practice , etc ... time to ' play' .!!

time to strip down a sell the fretless ( not gonna lose time working on that after 44 yrs of frets )
and sell a few other gtr/bass toys and concentrate a bit more on keys again ... less left wrist twisting ..!
