But I once heard someone said that the MIJ's Sadowsky has a lousy 5th string. The B string isn't tight.

I've had 2 Sadowsky 5 strings. One was a Modern -24 with the soap bars. It had a really nice B string. The other was a JJ5 and it had a lousy B string.
Surprised a nyc jj have lousy b string. How’s your 5-24 sound like? And what’s the wood combination of it? Thanks!
Here’s a video I came across today. It’s a custom bass called maruszczyk , and I’m stunned with it’s versatile tone and the smoothness of it. Neither was a NYC bass. I can't afford that. They were both Metro's. Cant remember the woods. It was a while ago.

^^^This. You can get a beautiful Euro brand new in your budget or even a used USA. Big bottom and punchy is exactly what the doctor ordered with a prescription of Spector. Suggestions of Tune and Roscoe are excellent choices too but Spector has the edge.

not sure if a Maruszczyk Elwood fits into your band context - my feeling of gut tends towards Zon (as said) or Spector.
Anyway: I've been playing an Elwood 5 fretless for years and can only say the best about the instrument. Mine was an "L" model, chambered body and ridiculous 3.7 kg weight. Well built, classic tonewoods, passive electronics, nothing to complain. Being a J-clone, the neck was surprisingly fat, more than you expected from a J but with perfect playability. And she could sing and MWAaaaahhh for ages
. Adrian (the owner and the guy in the video) is a nice person, friendly and (being a bassplayer) competent. You may want to call him, he`s usually very responsive and helps a lot in designing custom orders. So, my 10 cents: you can't go wrong with a Maruszczyk bass - but you should consider if that's the sound your aiming at.

Actually, my tone preference kind of differ from my band's sound. I kind of like the tone shown by Adrian in the video. I'm thinking of getting a bass with the tone I really like, and achieve our band's tone with pedals and heavy drives, since I might be playing with others in other genres. I've already contacted the Maruszczyk dealer in Taiwan, and I'm considering to order a bass with the following specs. The price, around $2500, is very reasonable. go to ikebe-gakki site and comb through their site. Pick one and have them send it to you from Japan if you know what you want. Most likely it's the closest country with the best pick of guitars to Taiwan.
If you're afraid of what it might feel or sound like, a ticket to Taipei to Tokyo is something like 250 USD on momondo.
Get on a plane early, go to Shinjuku, Akihabara, Ochanomizu, Ikebukuro, etc, use the day wisely, sleep at a cheap hotel, go look for more guitars, buy one and then take a bus back to the airpot. It will be a super-sonic tour of Japan but you're sure to find something. The stores there literally have hundreds of guitar, and I don't mean Sire and Squire but Jerzy, F bass, Fodera, MTD, Sadowsky, etc etc.

I actually bought my last two basses at Japan, so I’m kinda familiar to the price and stores. Thanks for the advice though.
If you can get your hands on one for that price range in your region, a musicman bongo may fit your needs. Its very clear and punchy and works great with the darkglass. I play a bongo 6 through both the vintage ultra and b3k. The bongos are also very well represented in progressive rock and metal. It has dual humbuckers instead of soapbars though. Dream theater, epica, chelsea grin, and the omnific are all bands that have a bongo in them.
Can't comment on this since mine is a four stringer. Good luck with the search and keep us posted!
