Recommendations for a 5 String Bass for Progressive Metal?

I would be adding distortion. I want something sort of in between Nolly and Dick Lövgren. I have considered Dingwall basses, but there are not a lot of places to try those out.

Considering your two references, Dingwall is clearly what you want: I haven’t heard another bass take distortion better, especially when tuning down.

The bass player for Car Bomb, Jon Modell, gets a great Lovgren style sound out of his Dingwall as well.

Warwick Spector or EBMM. Honestly, the type of preamp or distortion you're using will have more of an effect than the bass. Plug an american standard J bass into a VT bass or darkglass and play with a pick and there you go.

Some must haves will be active pickups, or hot passive pickups, a 5 string or tuned down 4 and an amp known for aggressive tone.

My personal preference is Warwick and GK, naturally grindy tone.

You can look at the Dean Edge 1 5-string. I put chromes on mine and it sounded great. It will set you back $220. Worth a look. :D

Everyone is just going to throw out their favorites, which is helpful no doubt (all great suggestions), but perhaps not as helpful as you picking out YOUR favorite tones and then doing your best to mimic them. If Nolly is your dude, then you can get an NG2 or NG3 and a Darkglass B7K used (if cost is a factor) and you should be off to the races.

Dingwall, Warwick, Spector and to a lesser degree Kiesel. But really just grab a Dingwall or Warwick and you'll be set. Personally I prefer Warwick due to the neck and woods but their feel is pretty polarizing for most people. Same for multiscale, it is not for me but lots of people love it.
