REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

Stop showing me that Ventura as I stare this old worn out Art mic preamp in the face...I'm in enough trouble with the wife already ;)

Glad you got it all worked out to your satisfaction, bro. The REDDI really is an amazing piece of gear, ain't it?

I really want that Ventura, but too many new things lately and I don't really want to sell anything......yet.
Last weekend was my first full show with the REDDI live. I went direct to it to FOH and through to my Streamliner into a 3way cab. I really really liked the tone and feel in the mains with the REDDI in comparison to the streamliner DI or my Dave Hall Amps DHA eq-di that I sometimes use. The other two mentioned are good, and I could never complain about either one. But there is something really special going on with the REDDI. The bar was not real big and I could stand just next to or in front of the mains, there were many times I just left my stage rig muted and was very happy with REDDI only. I have never had that happen before because I wanted an active amp for the "feel" and other DI's used were just not as lively for lack of a better description. Love it so far can't wait to get in studio with it. :)

I finally got mine! :hyper:

First gigs with it yesterday and today. Haven't had the time to go out in the rooms and listen to the P.A. myself yet, but our sound guy is very happy about it! I also got lots of compliments on the bass sound yesterday(approx 60/40 mix between the Reddi and a miked Mesa D-180 through a Hellborg Club Cab). BTW, the reason the XLR isn't plugged in is just becasue I wanted to make sure the +48v was off first.

Maybe Peter will chime in.. But I think the REDDI is OK if it gets hit with 48V phantom...

It is just one beautiful piece of analog gear !

I did not know that.. I know my REDDI has seen phantom at times .. and i did not have a problem.
It was on a club gig where there was only MASTER phantom and not per channel...
Actually he did comment somewhere on this thread about it. The REDDI does not play well with phantom.

Hi Jerry,

This is true in one respect but not true in another.

Let say you have a Bass that is active (48v)..........then that's cool just watch your gain stage. This will create an increase in gain going into the REDDI and you will have to adjust your levels accordingly. And at the same time if you turn off the active on your bass you will notice a drop in output gain and you will have to adjust your levels there as well.

Now if you are coming out of the REDDI and going into a pre-amp then you have to turn the 48v off on the PRE-AMP you are going into or you will NOT like the end results ;)

Think of it like this:

Using a Dynamic mic with 48v............not good.

So bottom line is the REDDI can take a 48v from an active bass BUT you do not want to go into a board or pre-amp that has the 48v turned on.

I hope this cleared up that question?

Thanks,

To Peter or any other fellow performer:

Have any of you tried the REDDI with the UA LA-610 MKii??
Is it too much "tube"?

I'm just very interested in getting it for my studio/live rig...

Also, I know it acts as a DI along with the gain/EQ/compressor section.

"Hearing" your thoughts now!!

Hi svtb15,

For some reason I didn't see your post on this thread.
:hmm:
Thanks for coming in ..................I think there is a question of where the 48v sits more than if the REDDI can take it.

Again, if it's coming "IN" then not an issue BUT if it's going "OUT" into FOH or a pre or whatever the it would be an issue if the 48v is "ON".

I think that's what is being talked about here? :hmm:

Hope all is well?

Best,

Hi JCRob,

I'm always a tad thrown back when I hear "TOO MUCH TUBE"

PLEASE no disrespect here okay?

;)

Here's something to think about:

Before Solid State came into being all they had were tubes pretty much, so I guess it all comes down to what do YOU want to hear!

Thanks,

Right as i got my REDDI , i also had an UA 610... That week i was doing a session with a known producer . I brought both my New REDDI and the UA.. We used the REDDI. I sold the UA and have never looked back.. Love my REDDI

Thank you.
Although, since REDDI is a DI, you go to a preamp before going to the audio interface, right?

Yes that is what i do...
I have an RME and my older Presonus on my home rig.. Just got the RME so I'm figuring it out.. The UA is GREAT stuff!!! But i just liked the REDDI.... Different strokes i suppose..
At home, I always go REDDI >EM500 Gold > Interface. On the Presonus Fire STudio Project I would use channel 3 and up.. Chan 1 and 2 you can plug Hi Imp bass right into it without a preamp but it alwasy sounds a little darker.. But since i have good gear i want to use it so i go in +4 with my EM500.
When i go on location i bring the REDDI with me and the engineer always takes the signal off the REDDI into one of their preamps.. If it be a Neve or API or whatever happens to be there..Sometimes i bring the EM500 but its in my home rack.. with screws... and im lazy..

... And i run my Output of the REDDI at 12 o'clock , simply for the fact that it is an easy reference point if i leave and come back the next day.. I don't want to think "um was my level at 10 o'clock or 1:30?" I know its at 12 high all the time.. I just like it to be monkey proof and simple..:) I dont think the level control changes the sound of the REDDI output...

The REDDI has enough gain to drive any line... but some tape machines or protools type rigs like +4 so that is why i like the Preamp to get a good strong clean signal...

Then i mess it all up by putting a VT bass in front of it like last week...:D
Hey but it worked real nice for what i was looking for.. REDDI = Secret weapon.. well it used to.. Now everyone knows about it:D

Thank you.
