REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

Hi DJJazz,

Question please?

How is SKB selling that case?
Are they saying it's for a REDDI or do they say it is for something else?

The reason I ask is ..........I receive tons of emails asking what case to get that doesn't cost an arm and a leg :D

Can you share the price on this please and if there is a number for that case to order one?

Thanks so much,

Got my new SKB case today to protect the REDDI and D12E.
Totally prepared for the studio or gigging again soon.

Peter,

The SKB case is simply called "SKB 3i 1610 Equipment Case with Foam". It's a perfect fit, once the foam cubes are properly removed to customize it. The case is waterproof too. It's great protection for my favorite DI box.
Average price is around $94.99. AKG D12E not included. :D

SKB website product link: Invalid Link Removed

I hope that helps.
Cheers!
Don

I recently picked up a couple of A-Designs preamps to complement my REDDI. I grabbed the P-1 and the EM-Gold.

I was anxious to hear what these preamps can bring to my direct recorded bass tone in addition to what the REDDI delivers. So I did a little experiment using a recording project that I'm in the middle of writing. I used a passive Mike Lull P4 bass with the volume and tone controls wide open. Then I recorded similar bass lines using different signal chains.

Here's my current studio rack setup:

Here's the bass I used:

And here are the audio results!

1) Lull P4 -> MFU8R (Internal Preamp ON)
"Clip - Complete Mix"
"Clip - Bass Only"

2) Lull P4 -> REDDI -> MFU8R (Internal Preamp ON)
"Clip - Complete Mix"
"Clip - Bass Only"

3) Lull P4 -> REDDI –> P1 -> MFU8R (Internal Preamp OFF)
"Clip - Complete Mix"
"Clip - Bass Only"

4) Lull P4 -> REDDI -> EM-Gold -> MFU8R (Internal Preamp OFF)
"Clip - Complete Mix"
"Clip - Bass Only"

I've certainly got my take on the results, but I won't spoil your listening experience with any more remarks just yet. Let me know your favorite flavor!

Nice looking bass! Black/maple is my favorite color for a Precision. Used to have a 79 Precision in black/maple with a black pickguard that I wasn't especially crazy about, but I wish I'd have kept it for the color ;)

Anyway, I liked all your clips...I thought #1 was the most lively sounding, but #3 in a mix was pretty cool as well. I don't know...I'd take any of them for sound quality. None of them sounded bad at all. If I had to pick one, I'd probably go with 3 but 1 is good if you like brighter.

Are you you still using that NOS tube? Considering giving it a try again now that I went back to rounds.

I just realized I had the pads engaged on the two outboard preamps when I recorded these tracks. And in the complete mixes, I ran all four bass tracks through the same EQ to make them play well with the other instruments (but I used the same EQ for all 4 to keep it apples-to-apples). Unfortunately, I set that EQ based on the first (and thinnest) take that went direct into my USB interface. So the other three takes that went through the REDDI probably got a little too fat in the mix...

Oh, well. Listen to the naked bass tracks where there's no EQ or FX, and you can hear the differences pretty clearly.

Like Jimmy,

I think they are all good but I like the REDDI>P-1 for the mix.
I also think the stock 6N1-P would work better but that's just me!
The stock tube definitely has a more universal appeal and works in a wider variety of situations. Still, the NOS tube has its appeal. Just too much of a good thing for me in the lows. I'm back on the stocker for good, I do believe.

Nice clips Greg! And yes, to me the differences are pretty clear on the naked bass tracks. I think #3 was my favorite as well, with #4 a close second. The overall brighter sound of #1 seemed nice at first, but I was quickly missing that thickness to the higher notes which is where I think the REDDI really shines. IMO, it's faily easy to EQ in a brighter sound at the board without causing any bad side effects, but it's almost impossible to make those higher notes sound meaty without really screwing up anything played lower.

Oh Greg,

Having the PAD in on the pre-amps would also have an effect on the sound as well.
That is if you were using the P-1 and or the EMs.

By using the PAD on those pre-amps and kicking up the gain you will get a tad more bottom end.
Add that to the NOS you may end up with more bottom end than expected. IMO

Thanks, Peter. Yeah, I read a comment to that effect in one of Kirk's posts, that's why I mentioned it.

I've since done a new clip with the pads out. Using the Roscoe LG-3000 below, I went through the P-1 for the lead/melody track and through the EM-GOLD for the bassline track. I also EQ'd each track independently, trying to make them sound as good as possible with the other instruments and each other.

And here are the naked bass tracks with all EQ and FX removed:

+1 The PAD does do some cool stuff

Hi svtb15,

Yes, I see the PAD more for Vocals than anything else but if you are using the REDDI with the EM-Gold I would not use the PAD (IMO) cause the REDDI already gives you all the bottom you would need.
But it all depends on WHAT you need!
If you bypass the REDDI and just use the DI then I could see it ;)

What works best for the application! :D everything is subjective of course......but I think you would have a hard time not liking it either way (IMO)
Just makes it harder to choose :D

Peter - Can you tell me if any ECC88 / 6922 / 6DJ8 tube will play nicely in the REDDI?

Loving mine like crazy. I've traveled with it for years and it fits nicely in a Mono Fader . . . which also holds cables, laptop, etc. Overlooked solution for transporting the REDDI!

Hi Ian,

So sorry for the delay in responding but it's been busy here!

These tubes are all in the same family but the 6DJ8 I can tell you more about.
I have tried this tube in the REDDI and it will require a mod i.e. resistor but I have found this tube to be hash sounding (IMO) Guitar Players like it with the REDDI ...well some do anyway.

If you go back in this thread you will see that a few people have tried a Nos tube with some good results but please this is all subjective.......Jimmy could tell you more about this than I could.

I just keep with the 6N1-P..........there are 2 out there that are not pricey...the Svetlanda and the Sovtek.
I think they can be had for 15.00 or so.

We use the Sovtek as stock in all the REDDIs.

Thanks for the tip on the case :D
