REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

Hi JCRob,

No, thank YOU!

Can you tell us more about this Live Recording you have coming up?
I'm sure Jimmy will have something to offer along with Kirk and a number of great guys on this thread as well.

But my questions would be:

Is it a Live in the sense that everyone will be playing together in the studio at once or will it be recorded from a live show?

Thank you,

To start from the last, it's a live show, and it will be our second live recording, you can see an interpretation of the first one (available in iTunes, Amazon, etc ;) ) of the hymn "How Great Thou Art" in a style I'm sure most of you haven't heard of: Bachata!

Note: if you're going to see and listen, please hear it with good monitors, and stick to end of it!!

Also, I'm attaching a photo of last year's concert...

Oh and Jimmy: I'm the leader of the band. :p

The bass you see there is no longer with me, as it's been replaced by a Pavel Aryel Dlx 6!

Here is the photo. Got it wrong the first time.

Wow, look at you center stage! Nice! Listening to your clip now...wowee! In that case, I totally stand by my first advice to you...let it rip! The way you all play, the music will take care of itself for the most part.

I know I'm being simplistic, but hey, 90% of a great recording is great playing.

Was recording a couple of tracks yesterday with and without it, and I must say I wasn't blown away by the difference in sound...

BUT, before every subscriber begins to throw rocks at me, I've to say as well that there IS a difference, to my ears (I consider myself to have good ones) it is in the definition of the low strings, and of course a little bit of tube warmth...

Normally I EQ from my bass' pre, and leave the amp EQ flat, and that was the way I A/B the sound with and without the REDDI. I'll have to go again and record it passive to see how it goes... Some might say that greatness is in the details (with which I agree), but maybe I was expecting to get thrown to the floor by just hearing it convert the mortal sound of my bass into something more angelical... :D (just kidding!!)

There's no difference in the line level going to an amp. I think theres only a difference going to board/xlr output.Wow!Nice picture....

Issue - getting a buzz from just the THRU port of my REDDI into amplifier. OUT port is fine, no noise. Very weird. Tried everything, even wrote A-Designs (they suggested "switching on the ground lift"). duh. First thing I tried was the ground lift. Didn't work, which leads me to think it's not a ground issue. :help::eyebrow:

just FYI - tried different cables, 3 different amps, and have narrowed it down to the THRU port. Just can't figure out WHY it would do this. I'm not a tech savvy person.

a) Does anyone know what could be causing this? Tube noise?

b) Is there a schematic available online that I could print out and take to a local tech to use for repairs?

4bw,

That is the first question Tech Support will ask and they are told to take it from the first step.
Have you replied back?

If you have tried everything possible then the only thing that would be left to do is either use your Tuner's Thru or get a "Y" cable or a splitter box.
Is this a new REDDI?
If it is new then PLEASE return it to the Dealer you purchased from and we will have a look.

There are amps out there that don't play well with the REDDI ..I haven't seen too many but the only thing to do is what I have suggested above and that should take care of it.

Hope this helped

i had this problem too which jimmy helped me.
put a xlr lift connector on the xlr cable.
laptops and other power ground noise is coming through the xlr cable. the connector disconnects the earth pin on the xlr cable. costs $5

i had this prob when connected to recording interface with laptop and an amp. the laptop power was sending ground noise thru the xlr cable which in turn came out my amp.
jimmy suggested i get a xlr lift connector for the xlr cable and has worked pefectly. $5

Yeah, I occasionally get a ground noise that the ground lift won't take care of, but for some reason, lifting pin 1 externally with a ground lifter works for me in those cases. Doesn't seem to be rig dependent as much...a rig that doesn't buzz in some places will buzz in another.

I've owned my REDDI for going on two years now and I use it on every live gig and studio session. I've lost count of all the compliments I've received on how great the REDDI sounds.

When using it live, I run the REDDI to our board, out of the thru into my Aguilar rig(DB751 or TH500 into two DB112) which is mic'd with an RE20. I then blend the REDDI and RE20 to give me the perfect mix for my ears. I just received my custom molded Westone ES5 in-ears. I can't wait to use them on a gig this weekend. I may find that I won't even need the mic.

Since this is part II, I'll post pictures of my REDDI Case and new in-ears. :bassist:

I'll have one of each!!

Hi Peter,

I in no manner mean to challenge your building philosophy or intended design. I want to give full respect to you and your amazing sounding piece of equipment.

However as you admitted, not having a "Thru" jack was something of an "oversight" in retrospect. Would it be possible that incorporating an effected, unbalanced 1/4" output is a future prospect? It wouldn't make the box an "effect" box. As Eublet said, it would just add an output option, so that it could be use a preamp. It's meant to send the best sound to the power amps in the front of house, so why not on stage too? :) It's a shame to limit the sound of this unit straight into mixing boards.

Again, just my opinion.

Hi SpankyPants,

I understand what you are saying here and in an post earlier I did say I would consider it if we were to do another DI.

I hope you understand that the Thru Jack was not an oversight in the design.....we left it out intentionally!
So please don't think it was an oversight. :)

I would have to look at everything before I could commit funds, time, retooling, and labor into adding this feature to the REDDI.
I also have to be a bit of an economist as well and that's the part I hate the most.
Ex:

Is there a real calling for this and how much will it cost and add to the price of a REDDI and in today's Global Economy will it sell for the higher cost?
These are just some of the facts that I have to look into.
Plus we have several designs on the boards and prototypes being made at this time of other products in our line.

So I hope you understand that this is not just me clicking my fingers and it's done (wish it was that easy)
There's a lot of homework to do and the first thing that comes to mind is were on earth do I place a 1/4" on the REDDI? :D.....front? back? side? I just started thinking of the room within the REDDI!!!!!!!!!!! ;)

But I will look into this when time allows.
I hope you understand,

Thank you,

I didn't mean that you had left out the Thru jack due to ignorance... I was trying to cite one of your posts saying that the intention of having no "thru" option may have been

stupid and we ended up placing the "THRU" after all. It seems more people like to use the REDDI live then I could have imagined.
I should have just quoted that from the start, haha.

I totally understand! And I genuinely do think there is a demand for this type of product. I know nothing of electronics, but my suggestion would be to make the Thru jack switchable as Pre/Post circuit. That way you wouldn't have to add many components or change the physical layout of the exterior. (Possibly saving money for everyone.) I'm just postulating... All of this being some sort of hypothetical, ideal situation. I have no idea how hard/easy it would be to reroute these signals inside of the unit.

I'm about to start tracking again, so the ideal scenario here would be that you immediately create a prototype like this and give it to me for free to record with. :ninja:

In all seriousness, the same way more people wanted to use the REDDI for live use than anticipated, I think more people would like to take it even further in that same live situation.

I'm very appreciative that you are open to the suggestion though. As it stands now, it's more likely that I won't buy the REDDI in its current design. :atoz: I've done some tracking with it, and I loved it. I'm just looking for more of a preamp+DI unit for now. A man can dream though, can't he? :bassist:
