REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

I have to say that I am continually impressed with how receptive Peter is to suggestions and critiques on this board. Thanks for paying attention to your market, sir, I wish everyone else would, too. I have to agree with Brad (Mr. SpankyPants to you), though, that there is probably a huge market for the REDDI as a better preamp with the existing DI functionality. Frankly, the lack thereof is what has kept me from adding one to my stable.

Hi Peter,

I in no manner mean to challenge your building philosophy or intended design. I want to give full respect to you and your amazing sounding piece of equipment.

However as you admitted, not having a "Thru" jack was something of an "oversight" in retrospect. Would it be possible that incorporating an effected, unbalanced 1/4" output is a future prospect? It wouldn't make the box an "effect" box. As Eublet said, it would just add an output option, so that it could be use a preamp. It's meant to send the best sound to the power amps in the front of house, so why not on stage too? :) It's a shame to limit the sound of this unit straight into mixing boards.

Again, just my opinion.
and mine. The ultimate weapon so near and yet so far.

For those who are wanting Peter to change the design to make it a preamp/DI, how much more would you be willing to spend if he was to release a REDDI-II? I'm just curious, and forgive me if this was already covered, but surely the cost would go up by quite a bit.

As for me, I'm happy with the REDDI, I love the way my bass amp sounds as is. I use the REDDI because I want to send a rich, hot signal to the board, the sound guy is happy, I'm happy. That's all I need.

REDDI is what it is. . . Many love it. . . Bassists, FOH folks, recording engineers. . . listeners. . .

Alternatively, there are many preamp DIs. They are easy to find. . . Except not here in the REDDI appreciation thread. . .

Mr. Montessi: I would gladly buy a bushel of strawberries from you, if only you would make them espresso flavored. . . lime green in color. . . and sell them inexpensively!

Just take two REDDIs and tape them together ;)

(EDIT: Don't do that...they need room to ventilate.)

At first I kind of felt the same way, but then I realized that I like the sound of my rigs as they are, and I don't really need the REDDI to do preamping, so I got one and I haven't looked back. OK, I looked back a little earlier this week ;) but then once I found out it wasn't ideal for the REDDI to be doing that, I forgot about it again.

I really like the "do one thing better than anything else and that's it" vibe of the REDDI. I'm no expert, but it seems to me that it would require two output transformers, and maybe two identical complete circuits. Sounds like fun, but that's going to bring the price pretty close to the price of two REDDIs, more if you add tone controls and enough gain to drive all power amps. I can't speak for anyone else, but while it would be fun, I really don't need it that badly. And while I would love to own every single piece of gear that pushes my buttons, that ain't gonna happen.

So put me down in the "would be nice to see it but too happy with the REDDI as is" category.

See? This is why we have these threads. I hadn't even considered the need for a second output transformer. I figured he'd simply piggyback on the first one, maybe have to upgrade that, but not too big a deal. If it turns out that you have to double everything, then it's cost prohibitive. If not, then I'd be willing to spend $1,100 on one that would double as a pre.

Yeah I tried a few different things with no luck and have realized that using an active AB/Y is the best way to avoid this issue in future. The REDDI's THRU port just does not like my amps I guess, cuz even at medium volume they all just buzz away even without a bass plugged into the INPUT.

So my signal gets split before the REDDI and I have to run a clean signal into my amp for onstage monitoring, right? Meh... not a big deal. Seems like it'll be okay, but I'll letya know for sure on Sunday evening after I play my church's worship encounter night.

As long as FOH gets the REDDI's OUT signal, he's happy. The guy LOVES my sound straight outta this thing. :D

+1. Couldn't agree more with MingusBass's comment quoted below!

If Peter does indulge the few, and adds a pre to the Reddi design, please, please please do not discontinue the original Reddi. It is darn near perfect as is for so many of us. Thanks!

Well I'm not the last word on this by any means, but when I saw the Kern pre opened up and saw 4 transformers inside (albeit much smaller ones), I deduced that there's likely a reason for it. Burning Skies told me what all they were, and of course now I've forgotten, but it seems to me that two of them were OT's, one filament, and one power. Of course, I'm doing the old "If all fish live in water, and a duck is in the water, a duck is a fish" thing, but it makes sense from a layman standpoint.

Ya, I think that'll work out. Sounds like a good idea, actually. The REDDI has enough gain where it can make up for splitting your signal easily enough. If your bass ends up not smacking your head's preamp enough for your tastes, you could run a clean boost on that side if you had to.

But if you haven't tried that external pin 1 lifter yet, I would definitely give it a try, but if you have already, then I think the ABY box will be fine. BTW, I've found that getting a buzz out of my rigs is very much situation dependent, and it's more likely that there's an ground issue with the REDDI going between your amp and the PA rather that it having a blanket problem with your amps. My rigs will be dead quiet on some gigs and buzz on other gigs. Such is the nature of transformer technology, and it can usually be overcome with the external pin 1 lifter. At least it's always worked for me. So I'd still carry one around with you for other gigs.

BTW, drowning in estrogen? My wife's OK with that as long as it's hers ;)
