REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

The best way to listen to tell the difference is in the high notes. Other DI's lose the bottom-end support on the high notes while the REDDI never does. You can add low end or a bit of distortion to the SS DI's and get a little bit back, but it's not the same. REDDI needs no such artificial boosting to accomplish it.

And, to me, the real REDDI effect is in the heft underpinning all of the notes. It's almost something you feel rather than hear... man, going through a big PA with a REDDI is just a treat. Listening at low volume simply may not convey the added authority.

It's not really fair to compare a true gain stage, wall powered DI to a passive or phantom powered unit. The REDDI has an obvious set of colourations (dare I say distortions?) that just aren't possible with passive or phantom powered DIs due to the severe design constraints inherent to those things. it's not surprising that even the best of the passive and phantom powered active DIs sound a bit flat compared to the REDDI (or Evil Twin, or U5).

+1

Well, we have a big PA at church, but I use IEM's so I don't know what I'd hear...:hmm:

Maybe the congregation would hear something sweet...:bassist:

I am itching to buy something, and I am pretty happy/set with my pair of Roscoe 5 fretted and fretless basses and I have been thinking about trying my hand at recording some stuff at home...

Is this not the point :hiding::D We should be buying the gear we do for the ultimate enjoyment of the audience. Just my .02 - Though, I understand a good pair of IEMs also makes REDDI owners pretty happy as well.

OTOH, I'm not going to tell you that you won't be fine with the JDI...you like it so you obviously will. But the REDDI made such a difference to me that I just can't stand the thought of using any DI that's not as good.

Of course I want to project good tone for everyone listening. I have over $5,000 invested in two basses. ;)

I don't think I'm projecting crappy tone with my Radial JDI. It's a darn nice box.

I'm just thinking "out loud" in a couple threads if I want to spend quite a bit of money (even though I think I can get a good deal from a certain retailer) for a DI for playing a couple times a month in church.

I don't do any studio work or even recording on my own - although I'd like to change that - so it's hard for me to justify a piece of gear like that.

Those that know me know I have had a hard time finally allowing myself to own a pair of amazing basses. It's the same thing with a DI like this. I have no doubt that live (opposed to recordings where it's sometimes difficult to hear the effect) it's an amazing DI.

I maybe need to do less writing and more lurking on this subject.

I hope I didn't come off as harsh, Steve. Wasn't trying to be. Just seemed like you were trying to justify it to yourself based on the quality of sound in the IEMs or (earlier) what it might do to your bass rig's tone, etc.

I think lots of folks would benefit from understanding that this is a DI. Period, end of story. It's not gonna make your bass rig sound better. It's not gonna do a lot for your perceived tone on stage (although some say it does actually help IEMs, but I have no experience with that). The one thing I know it will do is help you sound like a monster in the house or on record! Anything folks can make it do beyond that is gravy.

I get your point. You are right. I was thinking/debating IEM sound as that's what I hear at church. There are a couple guys on here who use a REDDI and IEM's and say it is noticeable with the IEM's as well.

I know it doesn't do anything for my amp - wish it would. :)

I do want those Roscoe's to sound as good as they can. I have been tempted to get one as I have been known to do crazy gear purchases in the past ;) and we do have a fairly nice PA at church and when we remodel/enlarge the room, new FOH will be included and the church is willing to spend to have good sound for the contemporary service.

You clearly appreciate the tone and quality of your instruments. You want the next step in your signal chain to preserve what your bass is delivering.

You can research a product over the internet but a fair evaluation really requires hearing what it can do in person. Otherwise you simply have to go on faith.

There ya go - get the church to buy it since it would benefit whoever happens to take the bass chair on any given Sunday! :)

I just ordered the Reddi today. Will be here Friday. I also play at church and currently going from bass to JDI to FOH, using IEM.
FOH = SLS Line Array with 2 15's per side.
Bass= Modulas Q6 with Barts and 3 band EQ
IEM= Aviom with Sony MD7506 Headphones

Currently I roll off the high on the Bass. Really am excited to try this think out.

I have also though about using a pre-amp with a compressor with it. I have used in the past a Eden WP100b and wish I still had it. Can't seem to find another good WP100, the ones I have tried have to much noise.
