REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-II

Status
Not open for further replies.
I just ordered the Reddi today. Will be here Friday. I also play at church and currently going from bass to JDI to FOH, using IEM.
FOH = SLS Line Array with 2 15's per side.
Bass= Modulas Q6 with Barts and 3 band EQ
IEM= Aviom with Sony MD7506 Headphones

Currently I roll off the high on the Bass. Really am excited to try this think out.

I have also though about using a pre-amp with a compressor with it. I have used in the past a Eden WP100b and wish I still had it. Can't seem to find another good WP100, the ones I have tried have to much noise.

I like the JDI a lot. I am so curious to hear what you think when you play through the Reddi. Please let us know what you think. Honestly, you are a Church Musician.

I am so impressed with the Reddi I must share my opinion with you all.
I've used numerous DI options available to me over the years. They all performed just fine as far as I was concerned. I had considered the DI to be a insignificant link in the recording chain instead relying on the source(instrument), outboard gear and engineer to shape the tone. I've been reasonably happy in the past with my recorded tone in pro studios. I can't recall the signal chain, maybe some old telefunken this, or Neve that- I didn't pay attention; that was 20 years ago! Today Bass is a hobby and the recording gear is in someones living room or my basement. As much as I dig all the latest technology, I am never satisfied with my bass guitar tone.
Even with all the hype here on talkbass I was hesitant to purchase the Reddi. I thought (since it had a tube) it may sound soft- bloated, bass heavy, dull... For whatever reason, I couple of days ago I decided to pull the trigger on the Reddi. WOW- I must say it's one of, if not the best investments I've made in bass gear! This box is so musical, I can't put my finger on it, it's not eq, it's not compression.... best not to even guess, The sound of the instrument comes through true and accurate but with a special character that just sits beautifully in a mix, or soloed. I highly recommend the Reddi, No matter what your playing style is or instrument choice, it'll put a smile on your face, it sure put one on mine!!!

Hi SlickB,

Thank you for the kind words.

You pretty much hit it on the head and something about how it sits in your speakers in a mix.

Thank you again,

That's exactly what i found out too.. It really is that amazing.. As you , i have been though the UA, Avalon, Countryman, Demeter, Aguilar, Fern, The Brick,Brookes Siren, a few Radials and a few other custom DIs.... The last one before i got my REDDI about 6-7 years ago was the UA Solo 610 lunchbox... I was on a session with the UA and REDDI together with a Grammy winning engineer... He told me to sell the UA and keep the REDDI and dont bring anything else but the REDDI in the future.. So i did.. He eventually bought one for his studio too..

As you said, it cant be described.... But it is a very musical box.. My REDDI, even though i take real good care of it has a few battle scars and chips on the outer skin... From a Guitar player that dropped it face first into the parking lot of a studio years ago... I pulled the gravel out and it still works to this day.. perfectly....

Got The Reddi in and have tried it out.....Good sounding box.....But may have a problem with it.

When I turn the input trim pot I get noise or something. It does not sound like a dirty pot, This happens when I play a note and set the input level. I am feeding it with a Modulus Q6 +18 Volts preamp and the input gain is almost off. I have turn the gain on the board down so I can put the input at 9'oclock but still same thing. I am hearing this on the XLR output. Have not tried another bass yet. Otherwise it sound really good.

Any thoughts on this.....

The board is not being overdriven and we are using a GL4800-48 board. The noise is only there when you turn the input gain pot and no other time.

Hi Jerry,

Does it sound like a ground loop?

Sorry I didn't understand at first and I re-read your post.
This only happens when you turn the Level control but other than that any buzz from the unit?
If you turn the pot a few times does the buzz/crackle go away?

Thanks,

IMO Great DI, I like the sound much better than the JDI and JDI is a great box, but the REDDI has a fatter, mids are not as harsh and highs are smoothed out and cuts through the mix better. Hard to put your finger on it, but I Like it.

As far as the church musicians, I also play in other Christian groups. This is some of the music we play....

Hi Peter

Thanks for asking, but there is no noise/hum no ground loops. The unit is nice and quite, until you turn the input gain to about 12'oclock, which is way to much for this bass Modulus Q6 18V then you will get hiss. If you turn the input control slow, you will not hear the noise or sound, but only hear it if you turn the control at a normal speed. To me it sound more like a digital signal trying to catch up. I will call you T/S later today.

Thanks

With loud basses, I'll have the volume as low as 9:00. Doesn't change the sound any, though. The level isn't a gain. And I haven't heard that sound in my REDDI, but I have heard it occasionally in other stuff I've used. Personally, I never worried about it since I just leave my volume on one setting all night.

I run mine at about 12 noon for the simple fact if im doing a session i can easily repeat the setting if i have to come back later on to fix something..
Like Jimmy, if i have Hot bass like my one P bass with a dimarzio,(super hot ) i run it at about 9:00.
The overall sound does not change throughout the VOL out settings... And i like that...

My REDDI is about 6-7 years old.. I ordered a second one today. One for the road and one for home... Our FOH guy will be very happy now...

Thank you Peter for making such a great DI.... It has changed my life and the way that i perceive a DI....

I think the best testament to the quality of the reddi is JimmyM...
He is a tube amp connoisseur that likes to use a mic .. and it passed his test.....
