REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

One a session at my friends project studio.. My two, and the engineers set up for a photo shoot..
Nothing can compete... We had another big name tube DI there that the client had brought along... Two seconds and he agreed, the REDDI got the job... It was more agressive with same top end, more grunt growl and the track just popped in the mix..

My original REDDI is outside of the case shown below,, Its LOGO tag is in a different location than the newer REDDI's.. They both sound exactly the same ..
I am going to rack them both up for some upcoming gigs that we are doing with singer Paul rogers.. One for DI and the other for a VT sim DI

I need to do something to give my bass more character at church. I use a Radial JDI now and it's really nice, but the tone os pretty sterile - especially through my IEM's. We are getting a new board (new Presonus Studio Live) that will allow me to put some effects and EQ to my ears, but that won't give me character. Really tempted to try a REDDI. I don't need/want/use effects so I don't want a preamp or effect to give me some character. I've used an Avalon before but that can be sterile as well.

Is the REDDI what I want? If it is, how do I get that sound for my amp when I do gigs without PA?

Hey, Steve - yes, the REDDI is what you want for your church gig. It will scratch your itch.

On a gig with no PA, you don't need the REDDI. Your bass amp provides the character that you're missing when you go direct with your IEMs.

I think what Steve is asking is how can he get the REDDI-like TUBE tone into his bass cab. Some have tried leveraging REDDI for this task but it might require different gear. I'm having success with this requirement by using a Jules Amp Monique+Demeter 800D power amp. The Demeter speakon jacks send the tube tone to the cab. Monique's DI sends the tube tone to the FOH. I'm actually getting dual use from the DI by using a dual XLR cable, which splits the DI signal and also allows me to locally record direct. The fundamental tone/performance of Monique's DI is quite similar to REDDI (I use both).

I had the same issue on my IEM gig and a church gig... I tried the UA solo610, the Radial, the Avalon, BDDI, countryman,,, and another Tube pre.. Finally i talked with Peter and he talked about his REDDI.. that was about 7-8 years ago.. Since then i am converted...

And i echo Jimmy and Greg

I have played the Monique.. and it is NOTHING like the REDDI.. The Reddi just slays it in every way on a DI gig.. Two completely different devices..
If anything the monique is more like a EQable UA 610. but it is not a REDDI... Reddi is unique in every way.
But i think the Splitter is a good idea. The same cane be employed with the REDDI... Although i never saw a use for that since your amp will sound competency different than any IEM or PA unless you are running a Meyer rig or equivalent onstage... IMO

My amp is a Genz Benz Shuttle 3.0-10T combo with a 110 extension cab. It's a nice little rig, works well enough for my background jazz trio gigs - which are all I play these days that aren't PA supported.

I just hate to spend a lot of money on a DI that I'll only use at church. I was looking at Mainstage as an option as well. I know it's not a REDDI, but I can use it anywhere - PA or stage amp.

I know I have a good bass, but I also know I'm not eating the maximum tone out of it with my current gear.

The Shuttle 3 is one of my favorite Genz amps - for solid state, it's very nice, warm, clean - perfect for jazz. If you're wavering on cost, and considering your gig situation, you might try to play your bass through several tube amps to get a personal understanding of what you're getting into and whether it's worth the dough. REDDI is a terrific tube DI, but it won't help change your cabs' tone (which I also used to own, and feel is somewhat thin and sterile compared to alternatives). But your questions seem to be leading into non-REDDI territory at this point.

See, that's my problem - along with some others. :help:

My little Genz rig does seem to be fine for jazz and pit type gigs so maybe I need to leave that out of the equation when talking IEM/Church gig.

I'm not sure what I want/need for church. I just know it's kind of blah right now with the JDI and as it's an IEM gig (no stage sound except vocals, acoustic guitar and the click click of drum sticks on the drum pads) I'm thinking a different DI/Pre might help.

If you are not sure, then wait a while.. The REDDI really is cool...
But if you are looking at some sort of sound modification device, then it may not be what will do it for you..
The REDDI is more enhancement of what you already have.. Not really a modification device,,
Have you messed with a VT Bass pedal? Or a POD HD , Avid ELEVEN for modification / effects etc?

I'm not sure that a REDDI is what I want/need but this response is similar to my past experience - although not as in depth. I have used an Avalon, BDDI and Radial JDI like Kirk, and he has way more experience than I do so I am thinking it's worth a try, but it's a $700 try!

Steve, you've agonized over this for about 2 years now ;) I hear you, though...I agonized over it as well because it's a lot of money for a DI. But I was only moderately happy using the VT as a DI in comparison to my tube Ampegs, and I wasn't at all happy with any other DI unless it was hooked up to the speaker out of my tube Ampegs. And just like the mic I loved, I'd get flack from unfamiliar soundmen doing that.

I kind of agree with Kirk, though...might want to try the VT first. Good little pedal for the money for sure. But nothing gets it done for me like the REDDI and I'm very glad I got it.

I haven't cared for the BDDI when I've tried it. Maybe "tube" isn't what I want. I just think that my sound with just my Roscoe and the JDI is lacking something. We have a decent (soon to be better) system at church - pair of subs, 3 way crossover, etc. so I don't think it's that.

Maybe I need to get a P bass instead huh Jimmy? ;)
