REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

For me, I'd like to see a rack version better executed. I would have no use for two REDDI's, but I would have a use for a rack mount version. It almost looks like you could fit four into that 2U space. The entire right side looks like a lot of wasted space.

What would be cool is if you could make a different case for the current REDDI that was 2U tall. On the sides of the unit it could have some screw holes to mount rack ears. You could offer different size ears to accommodate 3-4 REDDIs side by side (however many will fit into a 19" rack), so those that could benefit from having more than one would easily be able to do so if they wanted and those that only need one would have an easy way to mount it in a rack if needed.

Wasted space isn't what I would call it.
There is NO MORE room.
What you think is wasted space behind that face plate is the PCB for the power supply.

But please remember this is a prototype and work in progress. I have a ton of moving things around in there still ;)

Plus a 2RU is as low as I can get it.....believe me I wish I could get the transformers and tubes low enough. Even if I place the tubes on their side the output transformers are still larger than a 1RU even when I place them on their sides as well.

We did have Rack Ears for the REDDI but I found over time that the REDDI was too heavy for them with most of the weight being towards the middle and back of the unit.

I hope this clears some things up for you. I don't believe this would be for EVERYONE but I know Keyboard players will love it! and I hope Bass Players will too :D

Now I'm ready to REDDI.

Hey guys! This is my first time posting in this thread- but rest assured I have lurked here extensively :ninja:

It's my birthday tomorrow but I already have received my present to myself last week from Sweetwater :D

I'm a rhythm guitar player but I got a Squier VM Jazz 5 for bass recording. Since I have next to no bass skills I couldn't justify spending the money on a bass-only DI. Now my justification is that I'll be running bass, guitars, and even vocals through this red box :D

I'm making a music video soon for my song so you can be sure the REDDI will be featured...

Notice how Sweetwater sent me a bag of candy as well, heheh.

BTW I'm really stoked that you're still active in this thread Peter! I have a couple of questions. I bought some tubes for fun:

I know they probably won't sound as good as the original and you put it there for a reason... but I do like to mess around with different tones for different things. However are these actually compatible? I obviously don't want to damage the thing and/ or lose my warranty! Thanks :bassist:

Thank you Amroth,

The 6N1P is the tube the unit was designed to handle.
The others are compatible and they will work but the board wasn't designed for those.
Ex:

6DJ8 and ECC88 will work until you blow one of the resistors
on the board.
When you use the 6DJ8 it will work for awhile and the tone you will get is a tad gritty.......great for guitars (if you like that sound) but not so good for the REDDI.

There are other Manufacturers for the 6N1P that you could try but they are 6N1P(s).

Try a Strat through the REDDI  I happen to like the sound it produces for solos. The only issue I see with the Strat is the single coil pickups will introduce noise. You just need to keep the REDDI and the Strat away from each other :) and the buzz will go away. So just keep a good distance.

On a Microphone...........the REDDI will take a dynamic (SM57/58) but it will require make up gain from a pre-amp.
The REDDI doesn't have 48v so I know you won't like those results.

Try a Fender Rhodes or Wurly with the REDDI...it KILLS.
We just did the video for the History of the Rhodes and the people who used them over the years....interesting.
They all came up with the same results we did..........(the REDDI nails it) :D

If you have any question feel free to ask.
I do my best to keep up on this board but I will get to it at some point. Or some one here will already have an answer for you.
These guys have been great

Thanks again,

Thanks Pete!

Ok if i swap any tubes i will stick to 6N1P only. I know the REDDI doesn't have 48v but i was under the impression that if i used the 48v from the pre after the REDDI it would not harm anything... Am i wrong?

What is your opinion of running already-recorded guitar DI tracks re-amped through the reddi again? Time saver or better to just re- record and get the mojo right from the start?

Btw have a mod idea to add another blue led in series with the other but have it sit inside the chassis, with blue light leaking from the side vents. Might not be bright enough for this application however :hiding:

Amroth, congratulations on getting a REDDI. It's a magnificent beast! I don't gig without it, even if I have to fly.

I remember Peter telling us that he tried those tubes in the REDDI (they were wired to work safely with them, though) but the 6N1P version was the one that he and everyone else who heard them favored so they went with it. I've tried a different 6N1P in it, a NOS Russian one from 1965, and it added almost 4 db of gain and boosted the low mids a fair amount. At first I liked it, but then it got to be overwhelming when I'd hear it in the crowd, so I went back to the stock Sovtek. The Sovtek gives it a more universal appeal and IMHO is easier to work with. Might try a Svetlana if anything happens to the Sovtek, but I think Peter probably made the right decision by going with the Sovtek.

And re-amping is a very cool idea that has rescued some many well-played tracks that didn't have the right sound.
