REDDI Tube DI Mega-thread-III

I not talking cheap gear, but there is some level of reduced rewards between good and really good - again from an audience standpoint. But I do understand your point no doubt.

K....what he said did make sense to me. Ultimately though I keep coming back to an SVT or similar sized rack rig.....Bryston B3/F-1X or something. These damned class D amps have got me wanting my cake and eat it too but I don't think the kind subtleties I'm hearing in a REDDI are gonna come from an ultra light-weight or maybe even a moderately light-weight rig. Maybe it's time to quit whining and just get a V-Cart or RocknRoller and pack the big'un that has the big transformer subtleties I'm wanting.
I'm not unhappy I got a Rock 'n' Roller cart and a couple of little cheap rugs and mats. Got the R10. Holds a lot of stuff pretty steady, rolls over rough terrain pretty well.

And I hear you about the micros. No way do I favor using them over my tube stuff, and after recent experiences with trad solid state stuff, I'm starting to feel like I prefer it over micros now, too, and almost ordered an SVT 4 Pro at one time last year. But I hate racks, and if I'm going to move a 40 lb head, it's going to be the V4B so I got a PF800 instead ;)

I get that the REDDI is a DI. I also think it's not a bad thing to want that tone in your stage amp. I know it doesn't work to split it or try to make it a pre amp.

That's why I asked about using it as a DI as intended, but maybe changing my "stage rig" to a powered PA type speaker. Then I can still use the REDDI as a DI but in a situation where I'm not running into a big FOH and my IEM's, I could just run the REDDI (XLR) out to a small powered PA cab that would be loud enough for a small gig, yet still give me the REDDI tone.

I don't really use a preamp or make many adjustments. At church (FOH/IEM) I run my Roscoe's pretty much flat. I'm not sure how much EQ'ing is going on at the board - I'm guessing only enough to fit me into my sonic space in the mix - but for small gigs I don't usually touch my amp or bass eq.

I may try to experiment a bit (with my current JDI) with one of those new Yamaha powered PA speakers. They are really loud and don't seem to color the tone of what goes in. See how it goes. I assume it would only sound better with a REDDI.

If I decide to use a REDDI at church (my only regular gig) I'd like to have that sound available for any fill in gigs where I use my current small combo amp.

Does that make sense?

I do this for a case.

I got a Yamaha powered cab home today. I don't mind the sound from my JDI, but there's that hiss from the horn...kind of a turn off. Maybe I'm better off using an amp for when I need an amp and a DI for when I need a DI.

I found that it worked as a preamp.. It depends on the input sensitivity of your power amp.. As you know it is not a pre . but i was able to drive a Carvin DCM1500 and my old crown MA1200 with sensitivity set to teh .7 setting .. I could actually hit teh Clip light on the Carvin if i wacked the bass hard.. Which i really dont. But It can drive the right amp..

Was it not completely clear that I'm not asking for a DI/preamp but just a preamp? I get that a REDDI is just a DI. Like several others I have hands on experience trying to use the REDDI as a preamp. It doesn't work. If someone knows about a an existing instrument pre (NOT a DI/pre like a Monique) that has those big transformers like a REDDI and sounds like a REDDI I'm all ears. As far as I know nothing like that really exists though.

And for people suggesting that I just be happy with having the 2 out of 3 a REDDI provides my reply is, "NO".

I often wonder why after 3 years or more of this thread that people are still trying to use the REDDI as a preamp when we all now it is a DI.. Do people complain that the Countryman type 85 wont drive a poweramp.. NO they know its DI..
I just dont get the thickheadedness ... Its not called the REDPRE its called the RED"DI".. And you get about 16 dB of gain form the REDDI

Maybe in the future we will have a RED PRE with phantom+48 and Phase...
What i do is,, I run my REDDI into a Neve pre or Erickson Montessi EM500 to record.. Up to about 75dB of gain with that pre

Talking about the SVT4. .I had one at a rehearsal a few weeks ago.. I loved it.. I changed our gig rider from another brand that begins with an "A" , not ampeg... to the SVT4 head.. to me it sounds better than their 750...
The best purchase that i have ever made was my Rock 'n' Roller cart... Ive had it for years..
I have fly dates coming and i put my REDDi in its case and i know everything will be good.

I think it's because some folks have a hard time delineating the difference between a $750 high end DI that only does one thing but does it incredibly well, and a $750 amp that does everything but shine your shoes. There's also the "just to see if it can" element. That's why I tried splitting and preamping with it. Was unsuccessful with both, but I'm way successful with using it as a DI, so I got over it ;)

"Thick headed"? You really needed go there? Wow.....

For the record I am not unhappy in any way with the REDDI in its present form. I actually don't like the Swiss Army Knife approach and instead prefer a piece of gear to do one specific job really well. I understand completely and fully that the REDDI was not designed as a preamp and does not function especially well as a preamp. Further to that I don't WANT it to be a preamp. We clear so far?

Maybe in the future we will have a RED PRE with phantom+48 and Phase...

My needs lean more towards a simple single unit preamp for live use. As I've described it would have a large transformer like the REDDI, a simple 2 band "Linden" type EQ, enough gain to drive a power amp and no DI out...like the REDDI a very specific tool to do one job well. If something exactly like that existed I'd use it. Since it doesn't I'll rattle anyone's cage who I think could pull off building one. If that's "thick headed" then I'm thick headed as hell...and completely unapologetic.

And Jimmy please tell me you don't really believe I can't tell the difference between a consumer grade amp head and a studio quality DI or instrument pre?

If Peter or someone else eventually builds the preamp I want and it turns out to be as magic as the REDDI I'm pretty sure I'll be glad I didn't go with the herd and "get over it". And if I never end up capturing that magic with the box I'm picturing at least I went for it.

I've owned my Reddi for a bit over a month. I've been using it at rehearsals since we all go through the PA as well as our amps.

So, i took it to our first gig last weekend. I removed it from its case and instantly some guy in the crowd walks over and starts telling me what great DI it is. While I've had people tell me how much they like my guitars, I've never had anyone demonstrate such instant recognition appeal from any of my gear before!

The rest of the gig turned out well but the sound guy kept attempting ti adjust the volume on my Reddi via the level knob. Finally I had to tell him, it's more of a gain knob! If it's too hot at the board, adjust me there, not the DI!! He was seriously flirting with getting kicked in the head!! It's not like I set it wide open! If it's half way, it's a lot.

The level knob acts as an attenuator as I recall. It could have been too hot for the input at the board which would cause distortion. That could be why he was trying to turn the level down.
