This compressor is just sooooo smooth! and quiet... The attack and release are easy to set...
For folks that dont know what compressor we are talking about.. This is the BAC500 from Pete's Place an off shoot of A-Design the REDDI creator. Peter correct me if i am feeding incorrect info here..

Ya, that song sounds really good. Haven't really checked out their entire line of stuff until just now. Got to dig the generous use of output transformers. Nice!
Guess who's getting a REDDI? Got offered one by a friend for a nice price and I bit. Should have it in a few days. No more worshipping its tubey tones from afar!
I love cab micing but I've had a couple accidents with it and it's only a matter of time before I break it for good. Plus I really don't want to have to argue with unfamiliar soundmen about it anymore. I always give in and let them use their crap DI's and they tell me they'll blend the two the way I like and they never do. And emulators, while very nice and light and I'm also a fan of them, just aren't any substitute for tubes and transformers. Sorry.
So I got an opportunity to snag a REDDI, and I'm snaggin'! Hopefully this will stop all the arguing and bring about some healing and sunshiny feelings on both sides
I'll get my Ampeg tones from my Ampegs, they'll get theirs from the REDDI and I won't have to argue for 15 minutes about using a cab mic. I'll bet you, though, that I'll still get someone who wants me to plug into their cheapo Whirlwind DI

Sigh, end of an era. There'll be no one else on TalkBass to wave the flag against belligerent soundmen who refuse to mike and/or blend a live signal. No one else to raise our blood pressure with tales of unfair pre-show antics about micing a cab. The last icon has bit the dust to go direct. Truly, the loss is ours.
Don't worry, bro, I'm still going to do all that. The vast majority of DI's and preamps on the market aren't as good as the REDDI IMHO, so I still totally support going with micing cabs over DI if that best gets you the sound you want. And the Ampegs aren't going anywhere, trust me. But I really like what I've heard out of the REDDI and this little deal popped up, so I'm going to have some fun with it.

No, trust me Ukiah,
He will be dealing with FOH when they take and plug the REDDI into a pre with 48v active and gain stage all wacked out then going into some cheap speakers.
He won't go away anytime soon

BTW, I gripe about soundmen sometimes, but the vast majority of my gigs have nice PA's and great soundmen, though we do get stuck with lemons once in a while. I'll read the manual thoroughly and make sure they run it in spec, for sure!
Can't anticipate any problems since it's a tank of a DI, but very nice of you to offer. Really looking forward to it...tubes and transformers for the win! Thanks Peter!

So about this 6N1P, am I correct in guessing that this is a farily recent invention? I don't see it anywhere as NOS, and the Wiki page said it was a Russian invention. I suppose that would explain where there's nothing about trying vintage Mullards.

6N1P is a quite commonly used input tube in SET applications and it is from the family of 6922's (or they are compatible, I should say). I am sure there are tons of other information out there, but check decware.com. Most of their audiophile grade amplifiers use 6N1P as input tubes.
6N2P is a good substitute for 6N1P. Despite the fact that it reduces the headroom a little bit, it has spectacular ton!

Got to admit that changing to an entirely different tube makes me feel like I'm second guessing the designer, and all I know about this stuff is that I'm entirely capable of blowing it up if I mess with it

I am currently using them only on my preamp, both at the gain and output sections. In comparison to 6N1P in that system, it sounds more airy to me and it tightens the bass a bit more.
