Reggae Bassists Club!!!!

Sounbwoy, is this Glen Browne in the clip with Riley? I think I saw him with Monty Alexander a few years ago- amazing bassist, great feel and tone. One of my favorite dub albums is Termination Dub, produced by him and dubbed by King Tubby. he also produced a bunch of stuff in the early '70s on Pantomine, rereleased on CD as 3 discs, one each of vocal, instrumental/dub, and DJ versions of mostly the same riddims. They are all a must have, some of the most distinctive and quirky productions and arrangements in reggae, really top drawer.

I'm looking out for when Tarrus swings by anywhere near here- just the kind of old school reggae I love, and what a band!

I don't see the clip you've mentioned, but I'll go out on a limb and say yes. There's a live CD of him and Monty (Going Yard) I think. Rock Solid. Him, Desi Jones on drums (Chalice), Wayne Armond on guitar (Chalice) and others..

I play mostly roots stuff. My main axes for reggae are a Sadowsky 5 str. jazz with TI Flats, and a Steinberger L2. I run them into an old SWR SM-900 with a 4-10 cab. Both of the basses have great solid low end.
Prior to moving to bass I was playing melody guitar and guitar synth. The move to bass came after the bassie we had left. Question was "do we look for another bassist, take the time to teach him all the originals and hope it works, or do I jump on bass and we do the gig next week." That was a no brainer... I had played bass in other groups so it wasn't a big issue. I love playing bass in a reggae group cuz the bassie "drives the bus." :D

My first post as I join today 29/01/10.
First place I find is those that love jah music.
A noob in the way with only 18 months with current band man at the window.

play with rotosound 45 flatwounds and line 6 pod. Play a rickenbacker
and use a trace elliot combo and peavy combo for stage volume.
Playing a pop style, lovers rock and love the variety of robbie shakespeare.
Still looking for the deep bass clarity. I think the passive mids of the ricky will deliver if I can find the right eq.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
I`m new to this. Started with world music biassed towards zimbabwe and mid african music.

A Ric is not the bass one normally associates with reggae, but a couple of years ago I saw Misty in Roots at the Bill Graham Civic Center and their bassie played one. No idea what his on stage tone sounded like, but the house mix was as is should have been. As I recall the backline was an SVT with the 810 cab.

if i knew more reggae tunes, i'd join this club. but the only ones i know are a few bob marley tunes and slightly stoopid songs, thats about it. thats not enough for me to be part this. so call me a supporter of the club. though i don't play much reggae, i do enjoy listening to it.
