Reiner Amplification Megathread

Anyone ever A/B’d the Saturn V and the Studio 1200 who can speak to the differences?
The Studio 1200 is more solid in the low end, and not as mid forward as the Saturn V. I always felt the 1200 was a bit like a more tubey Aguilar 750. The VHF700 was very different, with less low end slam and a LOT of midrange harmonic richness. The Saturn V strikes a balance between the two, with thickness on the low end and richness in the midrange. The eq on the Saturn V is a bit simpler but more flexible that the studio 1200 I feel.

All three are absolutely killer, but that's how I hear the differences.

I'll have to break out my notes from comparing my three Reiner heads, but one thing which stood out to me regarding the 1200 is that it was noticeably more "smooth" and pristine sounding than the 700 or Saturn V. I left my A/B/C loving all three heads. They each do slightly different things.

I stand by my assessment that the Saturn V is about the baddest Class D anything that I've heard or played through. Just the right blend of present focused warmth and tube grit, gobs of power and the most usable 4 band EQ I've heard on an amp. Truly would have bought it in a heartbeat if funds allowed.

Nice to see all the recent interest and support! There hasn’t been much demand over the past year or so which probably worked out for the better because its been a pretty brutal year (several years actually); but things are settled down now, and the design wheels have began spinning again whether I want them to or not! :)

I've recently discovered Reiner from the classifieds and I'm intrigued.

I'm currently playing through a Mesa D800+ and two Mesa Subway 115s.

Mesa D800+ is an amazing head at an amazing price. Jonathan was the one to recommend it to me, and for years it was backup to my Reiner amp. I only gigged the Mesa once: outdoors in light rain and wind where the canopy barely covered the band (I didn't want to risk the Reiner, obviously).

The Mesa has great tone and impressive bells and whistles, but the Reiner has awesome tube richness and heft. As J.Wolf said, it's my favorite class D head. I'm still a huge fan of all-tube, I just don't want to drag the weight around.
