Reiner Amplification Megathread

Part of me regrets not buying a Saturn V because IMO it's JGR's best amp, but I already own his Studio 1200 and VHF700 amps which also sound amazing... and JGR kindly modded my VHF to bring it closer to the Saturn. The big issue for me is I've got no more storage space for basses, speaker cabs, or amplifiers, so I've been staying away from the Basses and Amps forums (aside from a few subbed threads). At this point I should probably stop buying pedals, too!

Lately I've been alternating between Reiner VHF and the Darkglass 900v2 micro. The Reiner sounds better clean but I've been playing more small/cramped gigs lately and the Darkglass saves me the trouble of setting up distortion pedals. That said, I use Reiner bass cabs for every gig: a single 1x12 Wunderkab is more than sufficient for those small/cramped gigs, but I also have the option of using a pair for larger ones.

My favorite cab is my Reiner sealed 2x12, but it has ceramic drivers. At 55 pounds or so it's still manageable, but the neo Wunders are just over 30 pounds each and as noted I often use just one. Also, a pair of Wunders are more efficient (louder) by design than the 2x12, which makes them my go-to for my biggest gigs, so it's just easier to stick with the Wunders. I gotta bring out the 2x12 again sometime: it has a vintage vibe in the ballpark of my beloved Berg NV610, which I haven't used in over a year (when my stoopid loud rock band broke up).

I don't know what @JGR (ping, ping) plans to focus on next.

Hey folks, I’ve been on hiatus for the last few months since building the last (for the time being) Saturn V. I typically try to focus on building during the fall/winter months but there isn’t anyone asking or in the queue for anything so I’ve been focusing on other things (mountain biking mainly!). The feedback from all the people that own or have tried the Saturn V has been overwhelmingly positive, but at the same time there has been very little buzz; I rely on word of mouth - so it is what it is.

Both of my parents have been terminally ill for the last several years, my Dad with ALS and my mom with advanced Alzheimer’s. My Dad recently fell and smacked his head, and he ended up passing away a few weeks back. I’ve been taking care of all that and am getting ready to move my Mom into an assisted living facility. So a lot on the plate lately, along with regular work and having little kids. On top of that, I’m hoping to get a new job in Huntsville this year, so I’ve
started painting the whole inside of the house in anticipation of having to sell. One cool thing about moving is I would be fairly close to Nashville which opens up a lot of possibilities down the road. But for the foreseeable future I’m not doing anything other than supporting the products I have out there. I’m pretty saturated at the moment but hoping to be in much better shape by the end of the year. Just have a few more big hills to climb in the meantime.

The end of earthly life can be very challenging. I feel for you, brother - hang in there. I'm still caring for my elderly mother. Though mostly blind, she's still fairly well mentally and handling things with amazing grace. I honestly don't know if I would handle it as well...

Sorry for your loss, my friend. You take all the time you need to get to where you want to be. Whenever you're ready to start cranking out some killer gear, we will be here! A Saturn V was on my list for 2020, so I'm a lil bummed, but I get it. You take care of you and the fam, and we'll stay tuned...;)

Hey Jonathan, I hope you are handling all this well enough emotionally. That is some challenging times. But... youve got a wonderful wife and family to get you through! Good luck on the new endeavors. The up side is that Talkbass is FULL of threads of small builders who encountered one of those times in life where circumstances demand your attention far more than your creations (whether truthfully or not) and the havoc that is renderend upon their reputations. I think it may be somewhat of a fortunate turn that you are in a short lull of orders and demand at exactly the time life is requiring you to be away anyway! Our passions come and go and so do lifes demands. Im honored to have been fortunate enough to get one of your limited creations and to have met you and spent time together. Take care of yourself, your family and your needs. We'll all be here waiting to see what inspires you next.

I hear ya, bro, I haven’t used my Bergie NV610 in years, it kills me! Best sounding cabinet on the planet and it sits in the basement.

Not to be a gratuitous enabler, but as a busy gear reviewer you have a better excuse than most of us. Informed opinions are the best opinions!

Thank you for your enablement, er..., I mean support! :D
