Ohmygoodness, I see that now .. thanks, silky. And right below that, "This will be blasting through a Heritage 810 soon!" .. I believe that's _my_ 810 he's talking about. Definitely very much looking forward to that! My neighbors and I are going to love it.

Hi Eric,

Got your DI and power module installed and wired up earlier this week - just need to drop the board in and wire it up. I'm celebrating the big 40 this weekend so things should probably come together by next weekend.

I was actually thinking about that today when I dated the inside - mine is Tuesday the 31st, but this one will go down as the B-day build!

That is one full-looking amp case.

What are the tube sockets mounted to? I have a number of amps/preamps where they're mounted to circuit boards -- haven't ever had an issue, but it used to make me nervous when swapping tubes. Speaking of which, *if* I ever got one of those amps, no matter how good it sounded, I would be unable to resist the geek-urge to try different tubes in there. Not necessarily pricey ones, just different ones...

While I'm asking dorky questions, what's the big red thing -- a transformer? What about the smaller, octagonally-shaped red thing next to it?

Big Red: toroidal transformer for tube circuits power supply

8-sided shrink wrapped widget: ferrite noise suppressor to tame switching frequency noise.

One end of each socket is mounted to the thick G10 board with a SS machine screw, washer, and nylock nut. The other end is secured with a SS machine screw and reinforcing washer to a metal standoff that is secured to the chassis with another SS machine screw. Those screws get Loctite in the final assembly. The sockets I use hold the tubes nice and tight, and the structure is very robust. I don't like sockets mounted to PCBs. Big red thing is a transformer. Little red thing is a ferrite.
