John, anything coming in the 2 ohm variety?

Hi Chris,

The 700 watt ICE module you see popping up in all the newer micros including the VHF700 is rated to 2.7 ohms, or 2 ohms if you employ current limiting circuitry, which I'm not.

The 1200 watt ICE is listed down to 2 ohms min and is fine thermally, but I've been able to get it to go into momentary protect if I really slam it, so I rated it at 2.7 min.

I know you have a unique cab setup where you want 2 ohms, but I think 2.7 ohms will serve the large majority so I'm not pursuing anything to add 2 ohm capability.
 
Thanks for the response Jon. We'll see how the cabs work out. I could wire them in series for 6 ohms but, id need to run a huge power amp for my greedy headroom needs.

Six ohms shouldn't be too bad if the cabs are reasonably efficient. I've actually been very impressed with the headroom of the 700 watt module at eight ohms.

When it comes to live tone obsession, I'm probably not your average player. But, if some of you were to gig some of my rigs, a LOT of opinions on tone and headroom would change. Then throw in some common sense about what you are willing to transport and you may very well find yourselves where I'm at. Its all good fun to me.
 
I don't know if this will matter to me, but just wondering - it seems you have two power amp sections in the amp. So how much coloration or impact is imparted by the SS power amp as opposed to the small tube power amp?

So, if I take a preamp out from the Classic 1200 into a decent 2-ohm capable power amp, will the sound be much different?

The power section consists of the amp module itself, the tube circuitry that drives it, and the transformer that couples them together. I've run the preamp out into my PLX3602 and there isn't any real difference - I think I slightly prefer the tone of the integrated amp since it has the transformer coupling and things are all optimized/integrated.

Not to mention the SL1200 is about 11-12 lbs and adding a 3602 is about 30 pounds total - not counting another 5 or so for a case to protect/transport the 3602 and a few pounds for extra cables/power cord. Kind of a no brainer: ditch the 3602 and gig the SL1200. That's why I sold my 3602. :D
 
So.... I know this guy... He may or may not have paid for his Studio 1200 earlier this week... Said Studio 1200 may or may not be alive and burning in as we speak... He may or may not be super excited about it... That's really all I can say about it at this point :p

Seriously neat and tidy work in such a small space with a ton of components. No pots mounted to PCBs, zip ties cleaning things up, what look to be nylon washers to stand the PCBs off the case... Amazing build quality.

The standoffs for the preamp board are actually aluminum. The majority of stock hardware that comes with the pots, switches, transformer, and other components is replaced with SS hardware, same as the machine screws and washers that are used in the rest of construction. All of the nuts are SS nylock; screws that aren't secured with a nut have Loctite to keep them from rattling loose. Wiring is teflon. I still need to finish tidying things up and apply Loctite and silicon and then she'll be ready to go! I'll send you some final pics when I do.
 
And THAT is why you're the best. That insane level of detail that you simply don't find in mass produced amplifiers is absolute magic. Obviously the proof is in the pudding (i.e. how does it sound? how much power does it deliver? how reliable is it?) but it's one of those things that informs the answer to those questions extremely clearly. This thing will rock. I can't wait.
