Reiner Amplification Megathread

Pretty sure @JGR would have told me if it was a vertical 4x10. I'm guessing a non-offset config like his sealed 6x10, but he can confirm.

I think JGR might still have a vertical 3x10 on the drawing board somewhere!

If I were to do a sealed 410, I’d probably stagger the drivers so they could nest in each other to make the cab a bit narrower and taller. But then it gets into the size range of the 610 so not sure if it would be worth it.

I like the form factor of a vertical 310 but it would likely be a hybrid reflex design and not sealed.

Also forgot to mention: there's some crossover magic happening in the sealed 6x10. @JGR, is it possible to explain without giving away secrets?

Yeah, it’s my take on a .5 alignment which works really well in this application - a column of full range with the other side rolled off up top - slightly changed from what you heard. With the latest crossover, the tone is very balanced, super punchy, and of course you get the nice dispersion on the top end. I’m going to build another proto but I need a new table saw first. :/

Interesting how we all hear things differently. Much as I love the VHF700, for me it was like the Saturn V snapped into focus on exactly what I was hoping for. So balanced, great mids and eq, and that feeling of power.

The new 1200 module is awesome, but I attribute the tonal differences to the preamp tweaks - I dialed the Saturn V preamp in on the 700 module (didn’t have the 1200 yet) and it sounded the same - the 1200 just gets farther into the pain and speaker destroying territory!

I just Heard the Saturn V side by side with the Beast of both worlds and I will proclaim it is my favorite bass amp made as of now....
Fast, Warm with perfect simple Eq and quite loud.
Damn.....
The dynamic response with right hand technique is bionic.
I hate to say I felt it bested the Arkham for my subjective esthetic.
Realize these are some of the best amps out there and I am being really
rarefied based on what i Digg.
I literally have no changes that I would suggest which is rare for me!
Back to your regularly scheduled program.......

The Saturn V is the knees of many bees for sure. I have no amp GAS and no excuse to ever drag my heavy tube amp to gigs any more.
I was actually wondering how the Beast compared to it, since they seem similar in concept. Can you describe what you heard/felt as the differences?

The Beast felt slower and darker and the preamp didnt feel as connected with the power section and the EQ was less distinct and slightly furry.
The Saturn V felt quick and warm but clear and very integrated. The preamp and power were seamless.
I own a lot of custom very high end studio gear as that is my day job and the Saturn is right up there
and the best I have heard in a dedicated bass amp.

All of this being said the Arkham is a great amp but side by side the Saturn fits my subjective tone goals better.

For hard rock/metal I tend to top off my dirt chain with clank machines such as Darkglass B7K or Tech21 dUg, but for classic rock standards I love the tubey saturation from Gasoline and/or MBD1. Last gig I set 'em both for low gain and left 'em both on all gig. Actually the VHF700 has a nice Drive circuit that I use every so often for always-on dirt (especially useful when I have no time or stage space for pedals), but of course the pedals offer more control.

Last Wednesday I had an appointment in northern Delaware, so JGR invited me to pop by his place on the way home to hang for a bit, take a rest room break, dodge rush hour traffic. It was another chance to check out his gear collection, and I also got to play monster with his adorable kids, chasing them around for a bit. Made for a really fun afternoon.

He recently got a table saw which will make cab building easier. I don't believe his goal is to add cabs to his product line, but he builds enough of 'em for fun that the table saw makes sense. Speaking of which: his sealed 610 is down because two of the drivers are being used in a 2x10 that he's working on. The proto (ported) sounds great! Tone is similar to his 1x12 Wunderkab, but to my ears the Wunder has a bit more in the low mids, while the 210 sounded a bit bigger down low. Also, the 10" drivers have remarkable top end, to at least 7k I'd say. I think the proto 210 was .5 aligned, but he's still tweaking and the next version might not be.

Here's a pic of a section of JGR's bass collection. Yes -- just a section. It's impressively diverse: Keith, Nordstrand, Dingwall, Hamer, ESP, Warmoth, plus more. He also owns over a dozen guitars. I didn't photograph cabs because they are not ready for primetime.

If there happens to be someone interested in JGRs handy earlier work, I have a wicked preamp available of his here...

Ha, SN#02 was mine originally. Interesting how far it's traveled the past couple/few years.

As you said, it's an awesome pre. Hated to sell it, but I unloaded all my other rack gear so there was no reason to keep it. Currently using Reiner amplifiers: VHF700 is #1, Studio 1200 as backup.

And if you can believe it, I owned S/N # 001 for a brief time and jumped on 002 because I missed it so much. I put this preamp head to head with a Monique Dovecage and the Reiner reigned Supreme. I have it paired with a QSC PLX2 1804 and plugged into a Bergantino HD410. Pure magic! On occasion, I’ll add a second HD410.
Gain for days in this pre!
